Life of Sybase ASE

Former Member

Team,

I have been working as a Sybase developer since 2003. Nowadays the openings for sybase is reduced a lot as we all know this. May be 4-5 years back, There are lot of openings for sybase (In India)..But most of the companies were migrated from Sybase to other DB vendors. where ever I go (project management), they used to use this word "Sunset" for sybase. When I compare the market it seems like that. But ASE 16 has been released recently.

How about the life of sybase ASE after 5 years?

Hi Karthikeyan,

Besides the interesting comments above, you can get information about ASE Roadmap on those links:

Same documentation available from "SAP Road Maps" -> Database & Technology tab -> SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE)

SAP on ASE Development Update - this is specially for SAP application running on ASE,

Best regards,

Victoria.

Hi Karthik,

I think this is not the right forum for this question, but let me put up my own analysis on this question:

> There is nothing called "Sunset" to sybase, Sybase is now expanding its roots in all areas in SAP and stand alone now, almost all the customers who purchase the SAP application modules getting the Sybase ASE as backend database also with the new emerging HANA data platform whcih is using Sybase IQ,ASE for cold data store and retrieval and HANA for hot data.

> As always there is a saying in IT "Update yourself to keep you Up to date in the Technology", now the BASIS admin's gets the additional roles for the Sybase Database administration for the Business suites applications(SAP Applications)

> There are good released of Sybase products DB/Mobile/SUP all are blooming in the technology, kindly refrain there is no "SUNSET"(15.7 ASE SP135,134 and 16.0 ASE PL05, SP01,SP02)

> For the traditional ASE stand alone customers there are lots of customers who are using the Sybase ASE for their legacy applications. However I am not denying the fact some are moving out of Sybase DB

It is the way how we take this and adapt to these new changes and keep ourself upto date and stand apart in our own technology.

PS: All these analysis are my own analysis, I am responsible for any discrepancy in my replies, also as I already said lets restrict this space for the technical exchange of the issues what we are facing in our administration day to day. Don't take me wrong

Cheers

I doubt there is an SAP forum that would be correct for this topic, so, personally, I don't mind seeing it here.

On a good note, if you are proficient in ASE, IQ and Repserver, then you are in a great spot if someone is looking for those skills.

We spent over 6 months looking for such a person. We finally managed to convince someone from another company to join us. We have always seen a very, very low supply of SME's.

Cheers,
