Hi all

I am working since 7 years as a ABAP programmer. In this day with sap hana s/4, I feel like, I have to learn Java and will SAP move away from ABAP?

I am concerning about my job.

Thanks for answer

You don't need Java specifically for UI5 apps, no. Going back to my previous point about S/4 extensions being developed in HCP, then yes you will likely need Java for that.

S/4 is still very much ABAP based. In the cloud version it is true that extensions now have to be written with HCP and so not ABAP but the on-premise version of S/4 works just like ERP does now. You can write as much ABAP as you want. ABAP isn't dead, it has a few new friends...

So, there will still be a market for your ABAP skills in the brave new world of S/4, but it might be a smaller market than exists today. If you are concerned about your job you should probably invest some time in learning these new technologies. But you should be doing that anyway - the world of IT never stands still, and keeping your skills up to date should be part of your regular routine.

So I have to learn Java and JavaScript for fiori?

If you want to build UI5 apps, then knowing Javascript, HTML5 and CSS will be helpful for front-end development. If you are building the back-end oData services then those are still ABAP.
