Changing career path from technical to functional.

Hi,

I have been into SAP for past 4.2 years. In the beginning of my career in SAP, I was doing an IDOCS support on SAP SD functional areas for 2 years. Then I moved into SAP ABAP and into SAP UI5. Since I moved to technical my salary got decreased when compared to the people who chosen their career path to SD functional side.

Since my salary package is too low, some of the organisations were hesitating to hire me, thinking my profile would be fake. Then I was requested by my colleagues to give a try on functional area (SAP SD) and proceed my career as techno-functional consultant.

My dilemma is whether the technologies like SAP UI5 and SAP HANA will have a growth in future, because I can find plenty of openings for Angular JS and no one still knows about the technology SAP UI5.

Due to high cost and other cool DB's which are already out there for low cost, customers are hesitating to buy SAP HANA product. In this case, Whether its right choice move into HANA technology? Does it helps to grow our career?

I am writing this because I couldn't analyse SAP market. Kindly advice me whether its fine to get into functional or stick to technical.

Regards,

Vicky.

Hi Vicky

While I cannot predict the future, I do believe that SAP UI5 and SAP HANA will have higher mainstream utilisation in the years to come. Get in early and get as much exposure to these technologies as you can.

PS...you only need to look at the volume of SAP HANA questions on SCN to see the demand is there.

Dear Vicky,

In India, generally Functional always get more than Technical.

UI5 and HANA are in demand now.

But I think there are not many projects in india and I think over a period of time some new technical area will be in demand and others will become normal.

So my suggestion would be to go for SD functional and abap would give you an edge as a Techno functional.
