Hi All,

I would like to know the difference between SAP PLM and SAP PDM.

I have knowledge about SAP PLM (to be specific Recipe Development) .

It will be easy for me to understand if we take an example of food industry .

1) When we should implement SAP PDM

2) How it benefits if I have SAP RD already placed.

Thank you

Regards

Avitej

Hi,

there is no SAP PDM.

You have SAP PLM for Discrete and Process Industries, in the latter SAP Recipe Development is a key component.

Most of the core data management capabilities are shared between the two. Formerly, and also still in some of the trainings, these capabilities are named Life-Cycle Data Management.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies. I really appreciate your comments. I won’t use SAP PDM word again.  It’s a sub set of PLM.

PDM is a design-focused technology that increases efficiency within existing product development processes by improving the management of product design data.

PLM on the other hand, is a strategic, process-centered approach that leverages PDM and other technologies—along with consulting services—to manage product life cycles, remakes processes, and increase output.

Please shed some light on the below example

My Company has future desires of having SAP RD. We are using non SAP formulation system. Now we want to implement PDM. So I am confused here. Let’s assume we don't have CAD files and all and my data can be managed easily by SAP EHS basic data and tools. For simple documentation and all, we have DMS. So if its about data management and single source of truth IDEA, what extra benefit PDM can give me.

When you say, we want to implement PDM, what does it mean?

Technically if you are decided to go with RD and have EHS/DMS, you are good to go.

I am not sure, but if you just focus on migrating your Formulation data only it could be just a PDM project as well using SAP PLM RD...

or if its a broader scope including NPDI etc it might deserve to call it as PLM project!...In the end i dont thinks it matters ! thats my perception.

What I have understood from business is that they want to bring all the data into one system. The concept here is to wipe duplicate data. We do have non SAP systems which don't play well with each other. More of building a classification system !!

Dear Avitej

you business scope is still not clear enough. Please answer the following

a.) I understood that you would like to use "Recipe Development" on long term. I assume you will migrate your old data to this new tool

b.) is there still the need to "push" then data from new SAP RD system to old recipe system?

Please as discussed. pay attention with the terms you use: in:

you will find the link to the tool which is called: Recipe Development (PLM-WUI-RCP) and a link to the tool which is called: Recipe Management (PLM-RM)

Both of them are part of PLM;.

Both tool do have /according to my knowlegde) integration touchpoint with EHS.

If I understand your explanation correct you "only" what to manage "recipes" in the PLM system?

PLease explain your needs better

There are lot of forum and individual preople who tell us about this term PDM vs PLM.

http://www.tatatechnologies.com/pdm-vs-plm/

Technically I am into this PLM-RM & RD from long time and you don't need any PDM as pre req or any other thing for implementing the SAP PLM -RD.

More over as mentioned by Ulf Petzel, there is no module called as SAP PDM.
