Dear SAP Guru,

I would need your expert advise, from few months I am interested in the role of SAP Mobile Consultant and I was wondering which skills, sap modules and programming languages a mobile consultant should have?

Right now I am working on SAP FICO, I will also take SAP ABAP and SAP CRM Classes.

Thanks a lot

Hi Lorenzo,

as Rodrigo said, SAP's mobile roadmap changed dramatically over time. The "oldschool" stuff (ITS, ITS Mobile, SAP NetWeaver Mobile Engine) which could be used by you as an ABAP'ler is nearly obsolete, except if you plan to use specific mobile transactions in ERP/SCM/CRM world.

The "one and only" valid way for up-to-date mobility is SAP Mobile Plattform (SMP) to be found here

Depending on your target knowledge skill (backend, frondend or architect) I would propose

  • SAP NetWeaver Gateway (for ABAP backends)
    https://training.sap.com/shop/sap-search?q=gw100
  • WDE360 UD development with UI5
--> this 2 courses allows you to develop nice FIORI things without SMP
  • MOB020 for Mobile Plattform
  • SMP541 for SMP in conjunction with hybrid apps on end user devices
  • SMP530 for SMP with GW100 (OData) usage

But overall, you may have to forget ABAP and get in touch with Java (Script), HTML5 and OData.

Best regards,

Matthias

Thank you very much Rodrigo and Matthias,

You're answer are very helpful, as I am a SAP FICO consultant my plan is to learn ABAP and work as developer and transition to the SAP solutions FIORI, UI5 and Netweaver with ODATA.

I am learning ABAP and I have a private trainer, we will end ABAP training in October 2015. As I just started and I could give up at any time the training (they are around 70 hours of training) I would like to know if ABAP Skills are necessary to work with Netweaver with ODATA and SAP UI5.

After ABAP i would like to take SAP Netweaver with ODATA training and SAP UI5 training (50 hours of training), and focus more on Javascript/HTML development. I have some basic understanding of Javascript.

Should I give up ABAP? Or the skills will be useful to transition to developer positions and Netweaver/UI5 development?

Also the netweaver and ui5 trainings have requirement of 2 years of experience as abap developer.

I also attached a document with the content of the course that my private trainer is offering me, could you give me an opinion if would give me an overview and undestanding of UI5/Netweaver?

Thank you very much for your help.

Lorenzo

Hi Lorenzo,

Remember that ABAP is not just learn how to code, there a lot of topics related to ABAP beside coding:

  • Forms (SapScript, Smartforms, Adobe Forms)
  • Interfaces (WebServices, IDOCS)
  • Enhancement (Field Exit, User Exit, BADI, etc)
  • BSP (Bussiness Server Page)
  • Webdynpro for ABAP
  • And a lot of functional related knowledfe for each module. For example you are a FI-CO, so knowing and creating exits in OB28 or OBBH (Validations and substitutions)

It's a lot to info to process in a short period of time, In your shoes I would get use to the syntax of ABAP and the language itself, learn a little of SQL and start seeing the "new" web things (foget webdynpro and BSP) and forget about the old things.

Like I told you S/4 HANA is pretty new, there'r a lot o questions regarding on HOW it will impact. For example Forms. Enterprises will continue printing their forms in S/4 HANA the user usses SAP Fior a webpage, so I don't know how the all process of printing will work, SAP Script will still be available ...we have to migrate all to Adbe Forms...and this is only a printing.

It will pass a long time until SAP forget about R/3 I have been told that in 10 years SAP is planning to stop giving support to R/3... so in the next 10 years all will be about hybrid landscape some on the cloud, some on-premise, some modules with SAP Fiori other not...

Thank you very much for your helpful answer Rodrigo,

I am challenged to understand all the possible developments in the SAP World (Adobe Forms, Cloud..), I do have 28 hours of training on SAP HANA, 68 hours on ABAP which includes Enhancement, Forms, Interfaces and a lot of material, 50 hours of training on SAP UI5 and Netwaver with ODATA.

I think your idea of training on UI5 instead of old Webdynpro is very good, and I will follow your advice, I am getting a very good insight of SAP FICO and I am enjoying learning ABAP code. I think I will try to work as ABAP/FICO developer for at least other 2/3 years while I get my training on other fields.

I think SAP is amazing and I really hope in a great expansion/success of the software.

Thank you

Best Regards

Lorenzo

Hi Lorenzo, if you are really interested in SAP mobile I'wll advice you to start learning SAPUI5 and take a look into SAP Fiori. As far as I know there is no SAP Mobile consultant and if there are I rly doubt there will be any future with "SAP Mobile"

Sadly SAP regards "mobile" never had a trully platform, there was something called SAP Mobile, then something with SYBASE, even was a marketplace to purchase apps.

The future is S/4 HANA (SAP for HANA) and it uses SAP Fiori as interface (based on SAPUI5, this means its responsive, can be used in desktop, tablet or phones) and this is NOT done with ABAP, at least not the layout part.

To simplify a little, SAP Fiori is the interface (JavaScript) but it consume ODATA Services (done in SAP Gateway (ABAP).

I'm an ABAPer since a decade ago and I found myself in a position were I don't know were SAP is going, something things don't work out... ilke SAP Mobile or SAP Portal, but it seems that SAP is betting hard with S/4 HANA.
