BI 4.1 Applications Thick Clients or Browser Based ?

Hello,

I have looked at the www.sap.com/LearnBI page, but from this I'm still unsure about what SAP BusinessObjects 4.1 applications are thick clients that need to be installed and those that can just be accessed via the web browser.

Can anyone out there list for me the browser based applications for SAP BusinessObjects 4.1, we are looking towards an upgrade from 3.1 to 4.1 and are in the early planning stages.

Thanks

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

Web Intelligence comes in three flavors,

1) HTML (Browser based)

2) Applet (Browser based)

3) Desktop (Rich client)

In my view, HTML is the best option for most of the consumers given that it is light and fast. Applet has more data source options and couple of features such as conditional formatting. Rich client (Desktop) provides offline capabilities and more data source options

Crystal reports

Both the versions of Crystal reports (Enterprise and Legacy) are desktop based applications. The viewer components haven't changed - Web, Java and ActiveX

Explorer - This is completely browser based application

Design Studio/Xcelsius - Desktop based applications

Lumira - Desktop based application

Analysis for OLAP - Browser based. Similar to BEx analyzer.

Analysis Office - Desktop, excel add-in

Stuart,

If you have previous BusinessObjects experience then it should be very easy to follow, see some link below with details information.  The tools still operate very similar.

Some key take away:

  • DeskI is retired
  • Information Design Tool is new in BI 4.1 for designing multi source Universes
  • WebI is still fully web based
  • BI 4.1 has major enhancements for connecting to BW related sources
  • BI 4.1 Platform is pure 64bit
  • Mobile is fully integrated within BI 4.1
  • Explorer has much richer content and functionality
  • Conversion from DeskI to WebI now fully support free-hand SQL with BI 4.1.6 (coming 3rd week of June)

Regards,

Ajay
