Alternate BOM selection without Production Version in Production Order

Dear All

My client has given me a rather gruelling job.. His demand is as follow:

He wants that, while creating the production order, the selection of alternative BOM, should be done manually. Also, the main issue is he does not want to maintain the Production version.

Is it possible to configure Production order creation, such that, BOM selection happens manually without the need of maintaining Production version?

Please help me, I have researched various places, but everywhere, it is showing that it could only be done using Production Version.
