Business Card Scan with ABBYY in C4C

Hi all,

I have tested the business card scan option from ABBYY. In my test two points didn't work as desired:

  • the city, postal code, street and house number weren't recognized
  • the email address is not always recognized (sometimes working and sometimes not)

Had someone the same problems? Is the city, postal code, street and house number in general not included in the scan?

Thanks for advice.

Best regards,

Deborah

Hi Deborah,

Currently "Address details" recognition is not supported. I do know that the development team are working on enhancing this and would be available in future.

With regards to email address, I will check on it and get back to you.

Regards,

Jeevan

Hello Deborah,

did you receive acceptable ocr results? What is your experience with this feature?

I also tested this functionality a few months ago in march 2017, because a customer asked me. Unfortunately I faced several recognition errors and I had to correct nearly every (+90%) scan. Especially when Abbyy tried to extract the company name from a logo the results were not acceptable. Sometimes it used the logo therefore even when the name was also written in normal font-type.

All together my conclusion is, that this is an interesting feature, which saves some time, but the quality needs to be improved until I can suggest this feature to my customers.

Best regards,

Patric

Hello Patric,

I just tested this ocr solution from Abbyy, but we don't use it at the moment in practice. I think if the solution doesn't work stable and the postal address isn't transfered to C4C, then I can also put the leads/contacts manually in the system. That's my personal assessment.

Deborah

Hi Deborah & Patric,

According to https://ideas.sap.com/D38709, this issue seems to be solved with the 1708 release.

We also see a huge potential in this feature but also think it has some limitations that makes it difficult to promote. To us, it would make great sense to make it possible to not only create leads but also new contacts and accounts from the business card scanner.

E.g. imagine that:

  • Meeting a new contact person at an existing client.
  • Meeting a new contact person(s) or new clients/accounts on a fair.

It would be ideal if you could just get these persons business cards and then create a new contact or account from the scan. If you agree, please vote on the idea through the SAP Idea Place: https://ideas.sap.com/D34468.
Thanks in advance 🙂

Kind regards,
Alexander

Is the scanne functionality a standard in Cloud for Customer? How can I enable it?

Hi Nils,

yes it is in the standard, but you need to register and request an API-Key from ABBYY (http://cloud.ocrsdk.com), because the OCR is performed by an external service. For testing purposes you get 50 free scans. Further pricing plans can be found on the ABBY-website (http://ocrsdk.com/plans-and-pricing/).

Once it is configured you can easily add new Leads by clicking the "Scan" button in the Leads-create screen by taking a photo of a business cards. Please keep in mind, this feature only works in the Android and iOS app. It neither works in the Windows mobile app, nor in a "normal" webbrowser.

For further information, especially how to configure the service, please have a look into the C4C Administrator Guide in the chapter "Enable the Business Card Scanner to Create Leads (optional)" it is described.

Here an extract with the important passage from the Admin Guide:

1. Purchase from ABBYY, at http://cloud.ocrsdk.com , the appropriate number of licenses for business card
scans for your company.NoteEach business card scan counts as one A4 scan.
As a result, ABBYY sends you the application name and password.
2. Log on to your SAP solution as an administrator and choose Administrator Mashup Web Services
Business Card Scanner Service .
3. Choose Enter API Keys.
4. In the dialog box that appears, choose Show API Keys.
5. Enter the application and password that you received from ABBYY.
6. Save your entries.
7. Back on the Web Mashup Services screen, select the Business Card Scanner Service and activate it.

Best regards,
Patric
