Kernel patch from 620 to 640 fails: R3trans fails, disp+work dies.

We are attemtping to patch R/3 4.7 (WAS 6.20) from kernel 6.20, to 6.40 (87). I've had to make env variable change on ORA_NLS33, had to create a soft link in the work directory to the kernel dw_stl.sl file (per OSS note), modified the Instance profile per sappfpar, and manually ran sapcpe to update the kernel links. I was able to get the CI started (also located on the DB server), but none of the App servers will start. The App servers reside on a different host and all terminate with the same error after "startsap <instance>". The disp+work processes all die. I can see that R3trans cannot connect to the DB and I believe that if I can resolve this problem, the App should start.

At the risk of posting a long entry, I have posted the content of trans.log below (output of R3trans -x on App server)

Do you have $ORACLE_HOME/oracore on your app servers?

Compare also OSS notes 566051 and 521230.
