I am trying to update CR 2013 from SP2 to SP5. Can i just run the SP5 update without stopping any services or servers? Is it a straight update without any downtime?

Thanks Danis & Ambarish. I will follow the guides.

One last thing. If we upgrade to from patch 2 - 5. Can we directly move to patch 5 instead of doing it in sequence from 2,3,4,5. Also, SP upgrade can we move directly to the latest version and by pass any older SP. Like from SP2 to directly SP5.

Yes this can be done. Most of the Patches / SPs are cumulative in nature.

So can we directly jump from patch update 1 to 5. without installing patch update 2,3,& 4

Say, if i just did a fresh install of CR Server 2013 no user, data and all and now updating it to SP5. Is it still required to shutdown all those services?

Yes. You need to stop the services. It is not only user activity, some of the processes running will interfere while updating. So always good practice to stop the services before applying the patches.

Yes, It is recommended to stop the Services each and every time you carry out the patching activity

You can find all these Services in the CCM.

Tomcat will be listed separately and rest all services will be under SIA.

Still unclear, In CCM there are only two SIA and TOMCAT. So both of them needs to be stopped? If i stop SIA.. How do i access to CMS? In particular what services i need to stop and how?

- Login to Central Management Console with administrator account

- Go to Server category

- Expand Server list

- Stop all the servers except for Central Management Server (CMS), Input File Repository Server (IFRS) and Output File Repository Server (OFRS)

As far as Tomcat is concerned, go to Central Configuration Manager (CCM) and you shall find tomcat listed.  Stop Tomcat.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Ambarish. This is more clear to me now. Under CCM there are two TOMCAT and SIA. I will stop Tomcat but SIA still needs to run correct?

Based on your questions, you do not have basic knowledge of this product, so patching it right now might be a very dangerous endeavor for you.

Please review Admin and Upgrade guides first and get familiar with Product components and architecture before attempting this.

You can find the guides here : SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1 – SAP Help Portal Page

Hi Jawahar & Ajay, Thanks for your responses.  -Jawahar, You recommeded to stop all services and FRS But Ajay suggests the patches will bring it down as needed. I am little confused. Can you all please explain little bit more in details?

Hi,

It recommended to Shutdown all services except the CMS, FRS and Tomcat while patching.

Please refer the below KBA that will give you a clear idea of the process:

When you upgrade the CR Server you will need to have Server & Tomcat running.  The install will ask you to log into the CMS and do the upgrade automatically.  The patch will bring down the services and then bring them back-up after properly upgraded.

Ajay

When ever you apply a patch or SP update, you need to stop all the services except CMS and FRS. Tomcat also should be down.
