Unlinking Devices from Afaria Device Management

Hi there

I have a question concerning device Management using Afaria 7 SP5 on Premise.

We have several devices under Management that have been enrolled to Afaria for corporate device Management.

Let's say a Person is leaving the Company and keeps a device that is under Afaria Management.

Is there a possibility to get the device completely out of Management, reverting changes on the device made by Afaria policies and enrollment without losing private data on the phone?

When I try to Unapprove, unlink or delete a device from the device list, I see that i can't push new policies or apps to the device, but Settings that have already been pushed to the device before unlinking or removing the device seem to stay.

That means, I can't even uninstall afaria or remove Afaria from the Device-Administrators (our Company policy prohibits this), even though the device has been unlinked, unapproved or removed from the device list...

Do I have to reset the device and wipe all data? Or is there another possibility that I didn't find yet?

The Goal: When an employee is leaving the Company and there is a deal that the Person can Keep the device for private use, I want Afaria to roll back device Management, remove corporate apps, remove Settings constraints, remove app restrictions (black/whitelisting), a.s.o. Private data already on the device and private apps should be untouched and be useable as before.

Do you see a solution for this?

Cheers,

Tobias

Tobias,

I am going to assume that you are speaking of Androids here.  Androids don't have quite the control that iOS devices do.  What you may be able to do is make a special group for devices that are leaving the company.  You can then unlink the device from the normal groups, and link to the new group.  This new group should have policies that remove the changes you have made, removes applications, etc.  Once that has been run successfully, you can then remove control.  The end user would most likely need to uninstall the Afaria client.  This kind of solution would be the only way I can think of to remove the corporate data at this time.  Depending on your company settings, a hard reset may still be required.

Hi Tracy

Thanks for the fast reply.

You are right, I was speaking of Androids... Unfortunately not quite the elegant way one would expect, but at least there's a workaround... Hopefully there will be a nicer Solution to this in future releases.

Is there any development being done in this direction?

If so, we would be interested in an elegant solution for this Situation.

Tobias,

Support would also like to see more elegance here.  I am afraid I cannot answer that question as it depends a lot on Google and the device manufacturers.  If SAP is given a way to implement this behavior, I am certain we would attempt to adopt it.  Androids are rather free form in API adoption by manufacturers so there are challenges one doesn't see in iOS.  iOS has its own complications.  Given the opportunity, I am certain we at SAP would love to be able to return the device to personal only status, removing the corporate data.

What I recommend is to get in touch with your account rep. and set up a call with Product Management about the product roadmap.  We here in support cannot comment on the direction development is taking.  We just do not have the roadmap information to share.  The Product Managers do and would be the best resource to fully answer this question.

Tobias,

In addition to what Tracy said, I want to make sure you are aware you can submit a product enhancement request for consideration by product managers. To do that go here:

Afaria?
