How would you answer to "What is Fiori?" in one liner ?

Having worked on fiori/UI5, when someone asks me 'What is UI5?' I could say "A JavaScript Library" & for this question 'What is Fiori?' i usually start giving a very big explanation to them. But considering the question 'what is it?' it really has to have a single term that could mean it or at least a very short answer that describes it. On thinking to find the single word definition i couldn't settle with one as many of them comes to my mind & some of those are,

  • App(s)
  • User Experience
  • Design (Interaction design /Visual design)
  • Grouping of certain technologies (UI5, oData, HANA)
  • Set of guidelines / Standards
  • Concept
  • Product

Though it's a generic question, literally it should point out to a single term. I'm interested in knowing how anyone would term it & if possible along with their justification.

Many terms and concepts have come from different leaders and marketing team members (and this has also evolved over time - just ask , who describes it better than anyone), but in answer to your question I'll offer my own personal view:  "Personalized and simple interface for helping people do their job."

In relation to the Fiori journey since the initial SAPPHIRE launch, and the irony (intentional or unintentional) in the title of your question, I would also offer that here on SCN, "What is Fiori" has become the community gathering of related content that is aggregated by the document: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41598 (being retitled to All Things Fiori)

Coming on Monday will be the new Fiori space (http://scn.sap.com/community/fiori), and the reorganization of the content found in the SAP for Mobile space.

The hype and buzz around Fiori is as strong as ever, and the future is very bright!

Hi Sakthivel,

I try to keep it short. 🙂

Typically with the term "Fiori", someone means either Fiori User Experience or Fiori apps.

Fiori User Experience is the new User Experience for SAP. It comprises principals, design and technology. See also http://experience.sap.com/fiori and http://experience.sap.com/ux-strategy.

Fiori apps are then the consequent implementation of these principals, design and technology within several apps. You can see all available apps here: Fiori Apps Library

Fiori is ....

Set of guidelines, principles, technologies and supporting frameworks + applications build based on those

UX itself is not Fiori. Better UX is a goal of Fiori.

: I agree with both of your views as it is what you've said. But i also disagree with you both for the reason that i believe Fiori is more than the front-end (UI5) & is also more specific in its back-end implementation. Say if am not wrong one just can't say it as a fiori app by implementing UI based on UI5 & back-end based on java/nodejs.(maybe, i might be wrong here ) So emphasizing only on UI5 could be an ideal definition ?

SAP Fiori began its life by being a set of apps/transactions developed using SAPUI5 and oData.

Later the name became associated with the design language and became know as SAP Fiori UX. Now it's more of a set of principles for UX design using certain technologies and branding.

Unfortunatly I don't think SAP Fiori UX is apropriate for all transactions types since responsive design poses serious limitations, but that's another story.

Yes I agree on above point. As per my understanding, SAP Fiori is new role based UX for SAP Business Suite! specifically application based on ABAP stack (roles based concept, OData services etc) and hence one can say,

Role based UX for SAP Business Suite based on UI5 applying certain design principles!

I will tend to agree with Chandra more.

Background

Fiori is created by Sam and his team to help SAP to build beautiful and user friendly applications. The set of Fiori controls, shell, tools, etc are the results of the effort to understand the popular SAP applications, think Mobile first, using Design Thinking to re-engineer and re-think how application should be developed.

Hence, one statement:

It is a set of guidelines and a set of reuse-able controls to help engineers (regardless of SAP employees or not) to build beautiful applications (regardless of enterprise or non enterprise application).

Moving Forwards

Fiori is evolving. The Fiori team is working with many partners on many projects and understand how to build beautiful application. They are learning new web technologies and tools; and using them as enablers to create beautiful and user friendly applications.

Disclaimer: I am not part of the Fiori team but I have friends in the team. And, worked with them in the past.

I still think that Sam Yen is the best person to provide answer to your question. I can ask him to chime in.

Hi Dennis,

I think it would be great to have Sam post his thoughts on this question.  It is a great question and from working in this community for several years, I can see how the answer has evolved over time, but Sam's perspective would be great to read!

It is especially pertinent since there is a team of folks preparing the new SAP Fiori SCN Community for release on February 9th (this coming Monday) and migrating a lot of content as well as reorganizing the "What is SAP Fiori UX?" page into "All Things Fiori".  It should help everyone to find more answers to their questions as well as the content they in which they are interested.

This is just a part of the ongoing Fiori evolution (revolution?) at SAP.

Cheers, Mike

Hi All

This is from Sam

Fiori represents the convergence of of SAP’s user experience across all products and solutions.  1) Fiori represents a new user experience paradigm that disaggregates functionally silo'd applications into a task-oriented apps that allow a user-centered personalization.  2) Fiori represents a consistent user interaction and visual design.  3) Fiori represents an modern technical architecture (based on UI5, Gateway, and a clean separation between presentation and backend business logic).

Thanks

I guess it depends on the audience, from the https://experience.sap.com/fiori/ website they describe it as new user experience.

'SAP Fiori is the new user experience (UX) for SAP software. It applies modern design principles for a completely reimagined user experience. SAP Fiori UX represents a personalized, responsive and simple user experience across devices and deployment options.'

I personally think of it as a suite of appplications, and framework that provides role base menu, which enforces consistent design pattern to ensure all application behave in a consistent manner.

Technical people maybe interested in the technologies that are used i.e. UI5, oData, but to me they are the building blocks.

Jason

You're answer now gives me a new perspective. I should have asked the question as 'What is fiori' in layman's term & the same in technical term
