historical vs. current view of infobject model ?

Hello BW Experts,

How would you handle a request to report on historical vs. current view of data for a specific InfoObject (e.g., a Material's material group - both historical and current views)?

one possible solution

I got suggestions to use it as a characteristic in the cube and also nav attr (if possible time dependent). I am not sure I understood the solutions. could anyone explain this.

wondering if there is any other possible way of doing this.
