time based data source refresh ?

Is it possible to have a Design Studio application refresh data based on a time value. I do not have a fully working connection to my data to experiement and before I go any further I would like to understand how data sources can be refreshed without user interaction.

Hi Scott,

Depending on your needs, another option you can consider is the Timer component available in the Real-Time package for Design Studio 1.4.  This allows you to periodically refresh data from BW and HANA.  It is documented in Section 26.9.1 Timer of the Design Studio Application Designer Guide.

I tried the Timer component and it would work great except that universe datasources do not have the refreshData() method.

I am still looking for a solution. I know I could refresh the entire app via http-equiv but that may lead to other problems.

Hi Scott,

Yes, unfortunately due to this limitation of universe data sources, the Timer component is only relevant for BW and HANA at the moment.  You may wish to raise a request in the Design Studio Idea Place for the refreshData() method to be made available for universe data sources too.

Given the absence of the refreshData() method for universe data sources, I'm not sure that there's a good way to implement periodic refreshes.  If you refresh the entire app then the entire screen gets re-rendered as well which is not ideal from a user experience perspective.

Mustafa.

Hi Scott - I like Patrick's suggestion here of using the timer component -

It's something I haven't had time to try myself but it is an idea for you to try.
