NetWeaver Portal - Strategic direction (multiple portals?)

Good morning. Wanted to pose a question to the group on the strategic direction of NetWeaver portal (or at least what you company is doing), as it relates to the portal landscape.

One approach is to have a single NetWeaver04s portal landscape (of course sandbox, dev, qual, prod). And, within that portal, hook in access to our XI, BW, R3, xPD, xRPM systems to it. The upside of this is of course reduced costs and less administration. The downsides are that applications are not insulated from each other, and upgrades to the portal require very good coordination.

Another approach is to have an approach where multiple portals are utilized, and then tied together with the global portal framework that is available in NW04s. And, have individual gruops have their own portal, for their own application. And, have a single UBER portal sitting at top that handles the presentation layer. Challenges with this approach is that governance may be limited (or non existent), higher costs, etc. I've already highlighted the main benefits of this.

Anyhow -

I wanted to throw this out to the group as a whole, and get your opinions on this. Can someone from SAP mention if there is an official strategic direction for this?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts !

Kind regards,
