Migration from SAP BW 3.5 to 7.4 on HANA

Hello,

We are planning for a SAP BW 3.5 migration to SAP BW 7.4 on HANA. I have got some questions. Appreciate responses from Consultants who have faced these scenarios:-

1) Can the migration from BW 3.5 to BW 7.4 on HANA be done in a single step. Or should it be done in 2 steps (3.5 to 7.0 and then 7.4) ?

2) What is the latest SPS available on SAP 7.4 on HANA ?

3) Client is interested in implementing NLS. Should we go with the inbuild IQ NLS in the newer SPS or SYBASE IQ ?

4) Does it make any difference if NLS is installed in the new BW 7.4 HANA box and then migrated or vice-cersa ?

5) Can Analysis Authorization be implemented directly on SAP BW 7.4 on HANA if its a MANUAL approach ?

6) Is there an impact on the Bex Authorization variables after the authorization concept changes ?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Please find below each question my answer.

Q1) Can the migration from BW 3.5 to BW 7.4 on HANA be done in a single step. Or should it be done in 2 steps (3.5 to 7.0 and then 7.4) ?

A1) No direct upgrade is posible according to the Upgrade Master Guide, it has to be done in 2 steps.

More information can be found on http://service.sap.com/upgradenw74: SAP NetWeaver 7.4 Upgrade Master Guide (Document version: 1.11 – 2014-10-14); paragraph 2.6 and 2.7.

Q2) What is the latest SPS available on SAP 7.4 on HANA ?

A2) SPS09 is available now.

Q3) Client is interested in implementing NLS. Should we go with the inbuild IQ NLS in the newer SPS or SYBASE IQ ?

A3) According to me SAP IQ and Sybase IQ are the same products. Only in SPS09 the NLS connection has been enhanced.

Especially if you want to migrate the database to HANA, it can be a smart idea to reduce your database size using NLS before moving to HANA.

Q4) Does it make any difference if NLS is installed in the new BW 7.4 HANA box and then migrated or vice-cersa ?

A4) I am afraid I do not fully understand you. I would suggest to upgrade to BW 7.4 w/o database migration to HANA, then setup NLS and reduce database size and as a last step migrate the database to HANA.

Q5) Can Analysis Authorization be implemented directly on SAP BW 7.4 on HANA if its a MANUAL approach ?

A5) According to me Analysis Authorizations are not changed and not dependent on HANA. Since the current release 3.5 does not have Analysis Authorizations, you will have to implement it. I would not recommend a migration of Reporting Authorizations.

Q6) Is there an impact on the Bex Authorization variables after the authorization concept changes ?

A6) I do not think there will be an impact.

Best regards,

Sander
