Hi,

I am basically a Mechanical Engineer with 13 years of experience in Engineering Service Industry and most of my experience is on CAD and PLM.

I recently got trained on SAP PLM DMS and I am trying to get into as functional consultant (Entry Level) as I don't have any previous experience.

Please share your opinion, Will this be possible?

Thank you,

Kiran

Hello Kiran,

Although I've worked for only two years in an SAP PLM department, I had the chance to meet a lot of PLM consultants (DMS, BOM, ECM, etc.) coming from various background (engineers like yourself, people that had worked in production, SAP consultants learning new modules, and so forth).

The best of whom, I found to be exactly the engineers. Because they have a lot of experience and understanding in the field that acts as a great buffer between the end users and the development teams.

SAP departments are usually divided into three groups: business consultants, functional consultants and technical/development consultants. The latter don't really require a lot of understanding of the business process, as ABAP programming doesn't differ that much between a PLM and an HR application.

As a business consultants, you would offer support to users and look for ways to improve the different
company-specific PLM methods and processes. But in time you will get to miss the action of being in the first line of engineering...

I strongly recommend that you aim towards a functional position. Why? Especially because you already know what the tool must do, and at the end of the day, SAP customizing isn't really that hard to learn. You will offer second level support and you will receive a lot of challenging tasks. Even more, you will be responsible of software requirements specifications, functional testing, and other activities that come hand-in-hand with the software development lifecycle.

Nevertheless, I wish you good luck!
