Dear SAP Seniors

I am a fresher in SAP industry. I had recently completed my SAP CRM certification , I have 4.11 yrs of domain experiece. (

My question is:

I got one Job offer from a Ahmedabad Indian CMM level 3, company who is new to sap industry ( they basically work on JAVA & Microsoft technologies ), they are not sap partners but they say they have a project in SAP CRM.

I had telephonic interview with them and got confirmation over the phone itself that i have to join very next day, when I asked for the offer letter they said come down to our office will complete formalities here but I insisted for Offer letter. Next day i got call from HR.

HR is asking to submit my oroginal marksheet and a bond for 18 months ( which was not communicated to me earlier )

Kindly advise. should i join over there or give more wait for more interviews. Am bit worried as SAP CRM Fresher openings is very less in market.

Waiting for your suggestions.

Thanks

Shridhar

Shridhar,

The world is not black and white! So, I will not follow

advise just because it is "unethical" or "these companies are exploiting people"...

...Main question is does it fit your scheme of things (your long term goals)? At this stage of your career you need quality experience (in SAP CRM) to develop your craft and increase your value. Will this company give you that?

Reading about this company, does not give a "clean and transparent" image of it. Further, it is new to SAP. So don't go for it. But if there is some other offer, demanding a bond...then again evaluate and made a decision...taking "you" into consideration...not the company...not others' opinions/advises...just is it good for you...at that moment.

Thanks TW.

My Certificates are my personal property same like my Passport. I will give the same importance to my certificates as that of my passport. If somebody asked me to pledge my Passport for couple of years with them, I would strongly reject that whatever be the benefit out of it. Moreover, it is not only unethical, but also illegal. In the similar way, pledging the educational certificates is no different.

Am much more clear now, Will give more interviews and as you said, will evaluate the offers.

Thanks again for giving me clear path and parameters to judge an offer.

Shridhar,

I have made it a regular practice to go for interviews. I am in SAP for some year now but still keep giving interviews...this is for several reasons - it will improve you, you will get input from interviewers and possibly you might get a "better" opportunity.

SAP career demands focus, hard work and courage, over a long period of time.

Good luck!

Hi All,

Being in India I am not surprised about this kind of recruitment practices.

Apart from this bond thing, there are even companies who ask for large sum as deposit for a fresher job in IT (including SAP). Then they will pay you a small amount every month over your 1 yr or 2 year in the company.. And dont be surprised that we have now, Lot of Project Managers or Leads in large MNCs who have paid this deposit for their first IT job (though nobody will admit it now...).

This is typically due to the high supply of qualified man power in this country. You just take any technology, any skill or education..you have ppl queuing up for an interview.  So in such market, companies try to exploit.

This is a typical case of that. Sridhar, are u in any of the cities like Bangalore/Hydrabad/Chennai., then you dont need to worry much. just do as others suggested, study, look around, network with freshers u meet in interviews..then you will know about places from where you can get live projects nd trainings.

Shridhar,

For me gut feeling is very important. Do I feel that the dealings of a potential employer is "clean", fair and consistent. If the answer is yes, then I might go for it. If the answer is no, then money and other perks wont add up to much, and my decision will remain to reject that particular employer.

This company does not sound clean. So, I would not go for this.

Dear TW

I had series of telephonic conversation with them and I do felt that transparency is not there.

I decided not to accept the offer and look for more options, better opportunity.

I would rather refrain to join such stupid companies. I wonder how they even got CMM level 3.

They do not even fit for CMM Level 1 with these pathetic HR Practices.

This is one of the malpractice by number of companies in India, just to exploit the employees.

Do not join. Wait for a better opportunity. I am sure you are going to get it.

Best of Luck

Thanks Ravi for clarifying... that was my thoughts as well but I was cautious since I don't know Indian recruitment market (must admit it'd be a very interesting blog to write)

Thanks Colleen.

There are different types of bonds they would force on the employees:

* Bank Guarantee: They would typically ask the employee to commit for 24 months to work for the company. They would ask the employee to provide the bank guarantee in order to get the job. The employee is required to get the bank guarantee from bank for 6 months salary (approximately). In case if the employee leaves the company, then the bank is required to make the payment.

* Pledging the Certificates: In India, Certificates are important and they should show to the new employer. That's why they would ask the employee to pledge the certificates with them for 18 / 24 months times. Within that time, the employee cannot go out of the company, whatever be the conditions.

* Some may ask for both mentioned above.

Whatever be the case, it is mainly to exploit the employee and get the maximum possible benefit. They could even force the employee to work in odd and more number of hours. Sometimes, it could be 15-20 hours a day, even on week ends and holidays.

Hi Shridhar

HR is asking to submit my oroginal marksheet and a bond for 18 months ( which was not communicated to me earlier )

Is paying a bond to work for a company standard practise (especially if they aren't actually covering your education expenses)? If it's not paying money, what are you actually being asked to do?

The fact they haven't told you and have also requested you immediately start is a bit concerning. Is this typical of hiring practises in your country? If they are unauthorised, how are they going to obtain SAP work (can they even tell you what the client will be)?

Colleen,

Probably the bond is to ensure that an employee cannot leave the organization until completion of the period (in the bond). If an organization is a vendor for an SAP partner, it could do SAP projects. There are many companies which work on dummy projects...their source of revenue are from the employees...some sort of organizations providing "real-time" training.

Dear Colleen

This is not typical hiring practice in India ,since it was different and unusual thats why am asking to know the SAP Job market and practices.( does this happens in SAP market as I am new to this )

Taking guidance from you, when asked them about the client , they said .."its of banking and financial services domain support project."

Thanks

Dear Krishna

Thanks for the reply .

Earning wise the package they offered is too low.

They are asking to deposit the original marksheet till the probation period.

With the Bond am ok with it.

Only concern is about the oppurtunity for more interviews for a carrer in SAP CRM , how should i get exposure for job interviews, eventhough am registered with all job websites.calls are rare.

Thanks

Shridhar,

For freshers the SAP market is tough. This is true across modules. Further you have chosen CRM which has less opportunities than MM, SD and FI (generally speaking).

In this period, you have to utilize your time so that you get most amount of experience. If this company would have had many CRM projects, then it could have been considered. But it is new to CRM.

In SCN, we have a CRM forum. Also revising your certification material will be helpful.

Chose a job where you get lots of work...so that in few years you will get a good and solid work experience. Other factors (money, security etc.) are less important, at this stage.

Shridhar,

Can you sit at home and keep studying the SAP CRM material? can you participate in the CRM forums (online)? If you can improve your level by self-study, then I will suggest not to join this company. This company is new to SAP CRM and you don't want to get locked into this company for 1 and 1/2 years. (worst will be to have no work, no experience after the end of 1 and 1/2 years).

Hi Shridhar ,

If you are having around 5+ exp and your going to a start up company means , you have to look all things.

1) environment

2) your roles & responsibilities

3) your earning things & location wise also..

Why they want certificates , if it is for verification purpose just show them on the joining date and take it back , don't handover until unless you are going to get a confidence on the company and

bond -- you can write a bond not an issue , but the thing is if your breaking the bond then??

Regards,

Krishna
