Upgrading SAP_BASIS component

Former Member

Hi everybody,

I administer an ECC system which is on ERP 6.0 EHP6. For a particular issue, SAP has advised to upgrade the SAP_BASIS package to the latest level. Presently, the SAP_BASIS package is on SP4 and the latest available is SP14. My question is that is it enough to upgrade the SAP_BASIS component only (and maybe the SAP_ABA also which is often a prereq to SAP_BASIS)? What about the other components like IS-PS-CA, SAP_APPL etc which are also on level 4? I always thought of upgrading the whole stack.....

Please advise.

regards,

Aman

Aman, before throwing yourself out into a major upgrade exercise - When you say that "For a particular issue, SAP has advised to upgrade the SAP_BASIS package to the latest level" is that something received through an OSS message.

Is so, I recommend you ask the question back in the OSS to SAP. Sometimes they recommend a specific upgrade of a single component, as you say yourself "for a particular issue".

I recommend you ask SAP before beginning to upgrade other components.

Otherwise I completely agree with the above on using the SolMan maintenance automatic evaluation features.

Hi everybody,

It's now clear that I'll need to upgrade the whole stack.

Michael, I did ask SAP (OSS message), they told me to ask my basis team....

One last thing before closing, what is your practice (or best practice) of upgrading the system - every 3 months (as SAP releases a Stack nearly each quarter), 6 months or yearly?

Depends on how many systems you have and how closely they are coupled with other system type.

I would personally say to patch system like ERP, Portal etc, once a year to latest stack, so that changes done from sandbox to production are done and issues fixed in a quarter of an year.

These days you dont upgrade single components...  you need to raise the whole stack.

Better you go for a stack update.

For dependency, check the '!' Icon or pacakge info from download section in market place.

If you want, you can upgrade only SAP_BASIS without any others but i am agree with Divyanshu, the best way is upgrading all Netweaver stack (BASIS, ABA, BW.......).

If you dont want to upgrade SAP_APPL you don't need to, because it is a component related to Aplication(R/3) and no related to Netweaver Base.

Hope that help

Get the stack.xml from solman and use this with sum to update.

There will be other components involved which are dependent on SAP_BASIS like SAP_ABAP, PI_BASIS (as far as I know). So you will need to take them into consideration. It depends on how you plan to update the BASIS component. If you use the Maintenance Optimizer (MOPZ) it will let you calculate the target queue with all the dependencies involved.
