Hello Gurus,

I have ECC6.0 saved on external hard drive and i use vmware workstation to run it on my laptop... it used to run ok, but off late there is a problem that i am facing and that is whenever i  use f4 key (in top row of your laptop) to find possible entries for a particular field.. instead of giving me entries it takes me back to log on screen  but for some fields on pressing f4 key it will give me possible entries... to give you an example if i go to tcode vov8 which is document header and place cursor on box which says SD document category click it and it will give a tiny circle by side now if i click on this circle it gives me list of possible entries for this field and also if i press fn and f4 keys it will give me a list of same possible entries for this field....

NOW if i go to any other field in vov8 and either press the little circle next to the field or try fn and f4 key together it takes me back to sap log on screen!!!  Can anyone of you possibly explain me why it is happening and how this could be fixed! i might not have posted this query in the right module so if you could suggest me where to post it that would be really appreciated....

Recently  hp has updated my operating system from windows 8 to windows 8.1 could this be the reason... i doubt this cause had it been i would not be able to log on to client 800 and access SAP in the first place! Any thoughts on this one....

Regards,

Amit

Amit,

Changes in OS can affect F4 help in SAPGUI.  SAPGUI uses ActiveX objects to display certain screens.  Microsoft has a habit of changing ActiveX dlls during OS upgrades and IE upgrades as well.

A simple test to check if this is your problem is to log on.  From any screen, on the blue menu bar Help > Settings; select F4 help tab.  For display select 'Dialogue' (modal); then exit; then log off.  Log back on and see if your symptoms have changed.  If they have, then you probably have an ActiveX problem.  Historically, many times that Microsoft releases a new OS version, SAP is sometimes forced to release some bug fixes to help us overcome the difficulties generated by Windows.

I am still using Windows 7, so I have no experience with 8.0 or 8.1.  Check OSS notes to see if anyone has reported any solutions to problems similar to the one you are experiencing.

After having had multiple challenges on my PC during previous laptop OS upgrades, I decided to leave all of my SAP help (both F1 and F4) as 'modal'.  It is not as pretty, but it is somewhat more immune to OS and laptop software upgrades.

If this suggestion doesn't help you, you should close this thread and repost in a SAPGUI forum, such as

Thanks DB,

Your solution has worked and as you said f4 list of possible entries for that field are not very pretty but that will be ok for now...  Any suggestions on which OSS note will get my f4 list for possible entries back to normal as in how they used to look...

Amit,

I have never looked for OSS notes relating SAPGUI under Win 8.1, since I don't have that problem.

You of course are free to search for yourself.  http://service.sap.com/notes

Or, you can create a new question in the SAPGUI forum as previously suggested.
