Data Migration into SAP ERP using SAP Business Object components

Hi.

Currently SAP Rollouts and data migration is going on in my project.
I am SAP FICO Consultant.

I searched and found out about various tools for master and transaction data migration from Legacy system to SAP system.

Some tools I came across are : LSMW, BDC, Call Transaction and Direct I/P.
All have their pros and cons.
Currently we are using BDC method and our process requires lot of work on excel sheets before uploading.

Then I recently researched documents on this community and SAP Marketplace Best Practices.
I found some info about how SAP BO's Data Services platform can be used for efficient migration.

Links I searched are as below:

1) http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-54115

2) SAP Market place best practices link for data migration
3) http://global.sap.com/community/ebook/2013_11_23102/enUS/index.html#/page/7

etc.

I was very excited and happy to see the new functionality offered.

I have few specific questions related to it :
1) Can SAP BO's Data Services platform be used to transfer legacy "transaction" data "into"
SAP ERP (ECC 6.0 EHP 4 and NOT SAP HANA) as well?

2) IF currently our customer is not using SAP BO then how can I as SAP consultant avail access to SAP BO.
then I can experiment and try to build a POC (proof of conect) to show. Is there anything available for SAP consultant to download SAP BO from marketplace?

Thank you,

Hi Shreyas,

Our team previously considered SAP data service based data migration.

1. DS also supports  'transaction data' migration, but limited to following object:

• Inventory Balance

• Accounts Payable/Receivable

• Planned independents requirements

• Order reservation

• Purchasing Requisitions

• Contracts

• Scheduling agreements

• Open deliveries

• Sales Orders

• Purchase Orders

• Internal Order

The SAP BusinessObjects Data Services tool allows organizations to easily extract, transform, cleanse, map, and validate their legacy data for upload to the SAP system using SAP NetWeaver IDoc technology.

for example, Sales order can be processed following steps;

. Configure and Execute Lookup Delta Population Job (Optional)

. Connect to Source (Legacy) Data

. Map Legacy Data

. Execute Object Processing Job

. Review Invalid Output

. Map Input Values in the Lookup Maintenance Application

. View IDocs on SAP

. Check IDoc Status

2. you may be required install BO platform in order to apply DS based migration

- please contact your SAP license manager and BASIS team for more detailing

- In some case, SAP could support trial license for you, depending on your situation.

Our case was to turn again to traditional tools (such as LSMW, BAPI, BDC)

- Performance issues have been 'critical point' in deciding specific approach and tools

(DS vs traditional tools, BDC vs BAPI)

Hi Ted,
You mentioned about performance issues for going back to traditional tools.
Could you explain further on that ....
was DS tool slow ? was the mapping process complicated, inflexible ?

Also BAPI is new to me.
I am searching for that as well..

Thank  you for your inputs,
Regards

Shreyas -

Firstly it depends upon various factors to choose a tool for Data Migration, such as number of source systems, number of source records, one time load or regular load, different validation and conversions need to perform during whole data migration cycle etc.

now when it comes to complex logic transformation/conversion, validations, multiple source systems etc. it is always good to choose SAP data services as a migration tool, performance is very good and can be handled using various ways wherever needed and I'll say if less source records, source available in one data file ( Excel/Text) and one to one mapping it is always good to go with traditional methods as LSMW, BDC etc.

Now when it comes to BAPI it is Business application programming interface, you may use it one way of loading data from SAP Data services to SAP ECC, mostly in case when IDOCs for the objects are not available.

Hope it helps.

Best !
