"Lost time" in Design Studio logs

Hello all,

Sometimes in the logs from a Design Studio
application there is some "lost time" in the steps (if you sum up all
the events happening you have a lower number of ms). Usually this time should be
up to 100ms. The issue with the logs I analyzed is that several times the
number gets lot over 1000ms.

I am referring to something similar to this:

733/422 ms: Create system service BICS_PROVIDER_QUERY_VIEW for AM1

In this case the events below this step sum up 733-422 = 311ms

422 is "lost time"

There is something I can do about it?

    Hello,

the statistics are not intended as a full detailed analysis which operation needs which time exactly, but to give an impression, where massive time is lost. Here are the reasons:

    • The timers of the operating system that are used are not very precise.
    • Some function measure the overall time that the function needs and the amount of time that is spend locally. This is show e.g. as "345/17 ms: Process rendering ".
    • However, while the total time is quite accurate, the locally spent time is often not 100% correct, as only the "main path" of the function is measured.
    • Theoretically the rest of time should be equal to the sum of the total times of the child nodes. However:
    • Not all child nodes are instrumented and produce time data. This is especially the case for smaller operations that are typically no hot spots.
    • 0 ms does not really mean 0, because of timer's resolution
    • In some cases there could be a difference between backend times (spend e.g. on ABAP, time spend on the wire and local time.

Anyway, the measurement should be precise enough to judge what should be improved.

    Reiner.

I'm curious to know what happens when you try the same query using RSRT? Assuming your data source is BW?
