2004s BI

Former Member

Hi Andreas;

I am glad we have a seperate discussion forum for this ramp-up. We are planning to upgrade our BW 3.0B to new version BI 7.0, I have gone through the most currently available documents and they looks amazing and love the new features like Report designer, HPA etc. ; As I know BI 7.0 is a part of NW 2004s platform. Does this mean while upgrading we need to upgrade to NW 2004s as well?

thanks.

Ravi,

Look in SDN area in "Business Intelligence". I saw appropriate document there.

Paul,

Any comment on my previous question about how you survived?

Vitaliy

We have upgraded our BI from 3.5 to Netweaver2004s SP8 and have had nothing but problems since day one. We have terrible performance issues, uptime issues, logon group issues, reverse DNS issue...you name it. We have a 4 tera byte database and about 2500 users. When we were on 3.5 the system was great users loved it, now they hate it and want off. We have opened several notes with SAP all of which are in work however performance still drags. We are on DB2/AIX with no Java stack only ABAP. We rolled out no new functionality or additional users, we simply upgraded the system. We have new hardware but still CPU is consumed 100%. We have seen some users consume 4 gb of memory when running small queries.

HELP!!!!!!

Hi Paul,

Just read your post, and I am just curious how have you survived the upgrade (although I understand it was almost year ago)?

Thanks

Paul,

Can you give me an idea of how long it took you to upgrade your systems. We are on BW 3.5 (SEM) with AIX app servers and DB2 z/OS database. We have to upgrade a test system, a dev system, a QA and a Production system. I am trying to put together the overall project plan and our customer wants it by the end of 2007. I don't think it is reasonable, so I am looking for some real life experiences others have had.

Thanks,

Hi,

I upgraded my BW 3.1 system with no java stack to BI 7.0. Currently it is an ABAP only BI 7.0. I was looking into installing the java stack on it. However as per OSS note 853572:

>>> begin quote

Java Add-In installation after ABAP upgrade and ABAP installation is not yet released and therefore not supported until further notice.

Note: Java Add-In installation comprises installation of a SAP Application Server Java stack to an existing ABAP stack utilizing the same system ID (SAP SID) and same database. Current workaround: Install your Java system as a separate/standalone SAP Application Server Java.

In case of a new installation you may directly install a double-stack system to reach the same result.

>>> end quote

Does that mean that I cant install J2EE on this server, but have to do so on another server? Without J2EE many critical BI functionality is not available....

Please clarify.

To clarify:

SAP NetWeaver 2004s ABAP system includes BI (as indicated, the new name for 7.0, which is not an official term). What we used to call "components" are now called "usage types". The following usage types are required as the platform for SAP NetWeaver 2004s BI: AS-ABAP NW 2004s version; BI_CONT 702 version; AS-ABAP NW 2004s, AS-JAVA NW 2004s, BI-JAVA NW 2004s.

Hi Joaquin,

you can upgrade from BW 3.5 to SAP NetWeaver 2004s. Whatever you call BI 7.0 (which does not exist in official wording) is included in SAP NetWeaver 2004s.

For upgrade guides, please check the SAP Service Marketplace:

<a href="https://websmp201.sap-ag.de/instguides">Installation Guides</a>

(Select SAP NetWeaver --> Release 2004s --> Upgrade).

Should be no problem to upgrade also from older releases to SAP NetWeaver 2004s.

Hi,

just one additional comment: the upgrade from BW 2.x is not available during ramp-up.

The upgrade is currently only available to ramp-up customers. Please also read the upgrade Master Guide, as there are significant changes in the entire approach compared to previous versions. Ramp-up is closed to new customers as the capacity is full for the program.

As Andreas indicated, we expect Ramp-up to be completed by the end of the 2nd quarter 2006. At that time the SAP NetWeaver 2004s BI is available (this is the new name instead of the version number BI 7.0).

Are there any ramp-up customers for 2004S BI that use DB2/ZOs on AIX? We are planning to upgrade from 3.0B to BI and would like to know more about specific problems encountered on this platform, lessons learned, and any learning experience in general.

Thanks,

Teresa

thanks

Hi Sebastian,

there are no official benchmark figures published for the BI Accelerator. Yet the general feedback by the Ramp-Up customers is very, very positive.

By the way, the performance gain is not only limited to the DB time (retrieval of the data <-> opposed to the OLAP / frontend time for the calculation and presentation of the query result, which is not affected by the BI Accelerator) for the query execution. Administration costs (no aggregate maintenance, etc.) are also lowered.
