Reference User Roles: Indirect Assignment

Hey,

I'm using the function module 'BAPI_USER_CREATE1' to create a new user. Therefore I pass a reference user. After the creation process the user exists with the following roles.

The roles below are only shown when the button next to the reference user was clicked. So are the roles truly assigned and what does the "indirect assignment" mean? I read some articles but couldn't find a specific answer to that.
