Hi Experts,
Can anybody help me out to understand what goes wrong while creating connection between AWS EC2 and Putty.
My EC2 instance work fine. But after putting all the require inputs in Putty the console has open but it did not show any
login prompt and after few times it shows time out.I have no clue. Please guide me to overcome this issue.
I am using windows Vista as OS.
Regards
Kaushik
I have seen similar behavior from Putty when port 22 is somehow blocked. That could be in the AWS configuration (enable port 22 for your IP address or, if you are brave, for all IP addresses) or possibly if you a traversing a corporate firewall.
Best of Luck

Hello Joe,
Thanks for your answer. I have stop Vista Firewall as well as McAfee and also assign Port:22 /TCP as allowable program through Firewall Exception functionality.
Currently,Port 22 is open and I am able to log in in my PC through Putty. But still struggling to make communication with EC2 instance. For your reference , I am putting current status of Port 22.
C:\Users>netstat -ant | find "22"
TCP 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING InHost.
Further more, i have create one new Instance and try to reconnect this instance through Putty. But still no hope.
I still not have any clue where it went wrong for all the suffering.
My ISP is Reliance and I am using Netconnect Broadband.
I am going to stop my instance if you want me to share the instance id for your checking , feel free to inform me.
Regards
Kaushik
It certainly appears that you have both the AWS side and your PC setup so that you should be able to communicate on port 22. I would suspect a problem with your ISP or perhaps your local router connecting to the ISP. I encountered something like that last week when I was in Madrid for our TechEd conference. At the hotel, it appeared that the network connection was blocking port 22. At the conference site, the public internet there seemed to have no trouble with port 22.
To debug this as inexpensively as possible, you might want to use one of the AWS linux micro instances which cost only a few cents per hour. You do not need to do anything on the instance, but when you know that you can connect to it on port 22 with your private key, you should then be able to connect to a SAP HANA One instance in the same way.
Hello Joe,
Thnx for your reply . I am also suspecting the same that it may be problem with my ISP. This ISP using multiple cross routers and everytime while connect with my node it is using different IP. If I send you brief information as output of "ipconfig -all" command would it be possible to you locate the problem, so that i can ask my ISP's network support eng.
to help me to sort out this issue.
Secondly, if you want I can send one of my instance id to you to check you are able to connect it or not.
I am using AWS EC2 instance which cost me 99 cent/ph after exhaust my $25 free coupon. U can check the instance details from below note:
Instance id:i- XXe XfbXX 'X- implies numeric figure'
AMI ID-ami-XXddXXXX 'X- implies numeric figure'
ami description-SAPHANAOne-Rev38-2
Platform-Other Linux
Owner-AWS-Marketplace
Root Device-ebs
Type-CC2 8 extra large.
Thank you again for your time and help.

Kaushik,
We will contact you via private email since there may be information that we want to exchange that should not be publicly displayed.
For the record, I will note that while "ipconfig /all" is useful in understanding the characteristics of your local machine and it's connection to the Internet, it is of almost no value in understanding the various routers and firewalls that may lie between your machine and the AWS data centers.
Hi Babuni,
While converting the key are you giving a passphrase ????

Bashob,
I guess you are mentioning about key-pairs to access the instance with tools like putty.exe. If so, any HANA One instance does not embed any original key. Once the instance is launched, it uses the key-pairs used to lauch the instance. We download from EC2 as a *.pem file when we create a new key-pairs. You convert and save your private key using a tool like puttygen where you may add a passphase to protect your key which is optional.
Thanks,
Swapan
Hi Kaushik,
is this question in the context of SAP HANA One from AWS Marketplace? If this is related to SAP HANA One, you may stop your instance till the issue is resolved to reduce cost while finding the issue or rather finding a solution to the issue.
SAP HANA One opens only port 22 once you launch SAP HANA One. As Joe mentioned, please make sure you are allowed SSH (port 22) to the instance from your network. You may try it outside of your network to eliminate from any other issue.
Thanks,
Swapan Saha

Could you please clarify what you are trying here? Are you trying HANA One from Amazon Marketplace or something else like HANA Dev Edition? If HANA One edition, did you go through FAQ and Quick Start Guide? We like to make sure how are aware of the end-to-end process in HANA One and familiar with cost and cost control option. If this is a Dev edition, we will handle it differently.
Thanks,
Swapan
Hello Swapan,
I am trying to connect AWS EC2 instance trough Putty to get it's full functionality.I have seen the Video tutorial for this and while following, I stuck there. I can't read you what you trying to emphasis of cost and cost control. Whatever information is there in documentation, I have read it.

Kaushik
Kaushik,
I am trying to understand what is you trying to do. I understand you want to connect to an EC2 instance. But what EC2 instance you are running? As you posted your question here, this forum is discuss all about SAP HANA One which is available from AWS Marketplace, has a cost model. We like to make sure each user understands the cost model and options to minimize cost while trying it out.
For SAP HANA One, you will get cost model and control option at and also at We like to make sure we are on the same page.SAP HANA One Platform FAQ.
Did you try to download putty.exe to connect to EC instance instead of using native client? If your question is generic SSH connection to an EC2 instance, please check out Connecting to Linux/UNIX Instances from Windows Using PuTTY - Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.
Thanks,
Swapan
Hello Swapan,
I am trying to satisfy your questions on below note:
Q1:what EC2 instance you are running?
Ans: I am using "Amazon EC2" Instance download from ,AWS Marketplace ->"Consol.aws.amazon.com/EC2" using $25 free coupon. I was followed tutorial "HANA one Videos-Provision with EC2 Consol" for download and activating the AWS EC2 Instance.
Instance id:i- XXe XfbXX 'X- implies numeric figure'
AMI ID-ami-XXddXXXX 'X- implies numeric figure'
ami description-SAPHANAOne-Rev38-2
Platform-Other Linux
Owner-AWS-Marketplace
Root Device-ebs
Type-CC2 8 extra large.
Q2: Cost model
Ans:99 cent/ph -currently I have not billed anything since $25 credit exists.
I have already go through the link which you mentioned for understanding of cost model.
Q3:Did you try to download putty.exe to connect to EC instance?
Ans: Yes, I am trying to connect AWS instance through PUTTY.
I am also using Elastic IP of Instance as Remote Host IP address and Private Key through PUTTY gen to authenticate the connection. After clicking Open in PUTTY......consol appear for entering but there is no log in prompt and after few seconds it has been showing time out .
Please feel free to inform if you want more information.

Kaushik
Hi Kaushik,
Thanks for your details. Now we understand you are trying to use SAP HANA One, you understand the cost model and you read the available documents. But you still have problems in connecting EC2 instance.
Before we go ahead, please go ahead terminate the instance from EC2 management console and then delete the EBS volume in the region from where you lauched HANA One while we investigate EC2 connection issue. HANA One is now available from Dublin, Virginia and Oregon. It will make sure while we are investigating connection issue, you are not billed.
Now follow Joe's suggestion after you terminated HANA One instance and deleted EBS volume to luanch a tiny EC2 instance (not HANA One). Let's now focus on connection issue with a very small instance which you can get paying few cents/hour (NOT HANA One). Please make sure you choose the same region and same key-pairs to launch a a very small instance. This will focus on connection issue involing your ISP, your computer and AWS. Once you can connect to this very small instance with either putty client or native SSH, you can try out HANA One.
Thanks,
Swapan
