ADD course from LSO enhancement - hiding defaulted referenced element

We use the ADD course from LSO enhancement in PM. An irritant that we have is that the referenced element is automatically defaulted on the appraisal document. However, that defaulted element has the name of the VB or VC object along with the columns to fill. It is never because of it's generic title and users are asked to delete it. Once users click on the ADD button and select a course, the name of the course is then the name of the element which is what we want.

Here's a screenshot of the defaulted element:

We've tried using the Hide functionality on the Element Access tab for the referenced element, which does indeed make it disappear on the appraisal document (see below), but then if you use the ADD button to add a course, nothing happens when you click OK (presumably because everything is now hidden!).

Here's our desired state of what we want to happen below. When the appraisal document opens, there is no defaulted element with the VB/VC name. Only the ADD button is there so that when we do hit ADD and select our course, then we get the course name (not the defaulted "Learning Activity with costs) and all of the fields to enter.

If anyone has suggestions it would be appreciated.
