Hi Mohamed,

Functional Location (FLOC) is an SAP concept that describes where an equipment is located logically.

Functional locations are built in a hierarchy so that a user can start at a general location and drill down to a specific location.

Functional Locations are a basis for organizing Assets logically, facilitating search for Assets and as a roll-up mechanism for reporting.

The design of Functional Location for an organization must consider all the potential uses

Equipment Master (EQ) describes a specific equipment and its attributes such as manufacturer, model, serial number, status, design specifications, size, weight, etc.

Examples of Equipments could be the machinery, production Equipments,  etc.

Equipment may have sub-equipment linked to them, which can be defined and maintained in their own right.

Equipment's are “installed” into a Functional Location so that the relationship of equipment to F. location can be established and maintained.

If the Equipment is removed, then it is “dismantled” from the specific location and its replacement equipment is “installed” into the Functional Location.

It depends on the client to decide whether they are planning to use functional location or equipment to create work orders. Certain client prefer functional locations to be used as maintenance objects.

Terence

FL - may be deptt./part of plant sections, subsections/working (functional) area where maint./operation activities occurs and/or machines (equipments) may be installed.-eg- assembly line, painting area, rolling section, workshops, furnace area, boiler section etc.

Equipments-  repairable/replaceable technical objects for which we want to keep performance track/history can be treated as equipment i.e. motors, pumps, gearboxes, transformers etc.

consumable like nut-bolts/bearings/oil seal/carbon brushes etc generally not maintained as Equipment, these may be considered as BOM (bill of material) of an equipment.

hope you will get some light, for further clarification, confirm your functional area (company's product line)

Hello Mohamed,

1. Go through this link, you have definitions and comparisons here here: Comparison: Equipment - Functional Location - SAP Library.

2. These definitions clearly makes one understood that things like

Buildings,

Big areas of Plants,

Big machines (may be a Furnace or a Crane),

Functions (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation etc)

and similar are mapped as the Functional Locations

and movable machines like

Fans, Pumps, Reducers, Motors and similar things which often are removed for repairs and replaced at other locations are mapped as Equipments.

The sap help provided above would help you understand more about the concepts.

Best of luck
