System copy on SAP HA on windows cluster

Hello All,

we are planning to upgrade our ECC6.0 production system OS & DB then need to compress DB AND SHRINK DB.

our production is running on windows server 2008sp2 cluster.

Source system :

ECC 6.0 EHP3 on NW 7.0

Kernel 700_rel

OS: WIN SERVER 2008 SP2 cluster

DB MS SQL SERVER 2005 SP3.

Target system:

ECC 6.0 EHP3 on NW 7.0

OS WIN SERVER 2008R2 CLUSTER

DB MS SQL SERVER 2008R2

Kernel 721_Ext

Our client is much concerned about downtime.

So we planned to move our production system from cluster(SAP High Availability) to non-cluster(single system) for time being, which can be completed in one holiday. Once new cluster is build up, then we will come back to cluster environment.

Task-1: CLUSTER 2008SP2 TO NON-CLUSTER 2008R2

Non-Cluster system : win server 2008r2 OS & DB MS SQL 2008R2

Kernel 721_Ext(we stabilize kernel)

Using 70SWPM Tool. (Here, ms sql 2005(cluster sytem) db backup will be restored on (Non-cluster)ms sql 2008r2).

1. I perform system copy using single/central system option.

2. compress database using MSSCOMPRESS report

3. Run SGEN

4 SHRINK DATABASE

For few days non-cluster production system will be running with Temp SAP License and end users will be working. Is there any issue, if we use temp license for production activities?

Once we build the new cluster with WIN SERVER 2008r2 and MS SQL 2008r2 DB, we will perform system copy using backup of "non-cluster prod database"

Need your suggestions on following tasks.

Task-2 : NON-CLUSTER2008R2 TO CLUSTER 2008R2

1. Taking production system full offline backup on sql server 2008r2

2. Build windows cluster 2008r2 system

3. Restore Non-cluster backup and perform system copy using HA option. it's not final backup

note: as we already compressed database on NON-CLUSTER SYSTEM. So no need to compress/sgen/shrink. which saves our time

One holiday we take full offline backup from Non-cluster system and we perform db refresh on new cluster. Which takes 3hrs.

Target system:

Kernel 721_Ext

ERP 6.0 EHP3 ON NW 7.00

OS WIN SERVER 2008R2 CLUSTER

DB MS SQL 2008R2

Please provide me your suggestions...

Thanks & Regards

Venkat

Hi Venkat,

Hope you are doing good.

using a temporary license should be fine for some days   even in production. But the official recommendation would be to update the license as soon as possible.

If you are using MYSQL, shrinking is possible:

Microsoft Library :
   http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189080(v=sql.105).aspx

SAP Note :
#363018 - File management for SQL Server

Do make sure that once this is done, you implement SAP KBA 1721843 - SQL Server: Database-related post-processing after  freeing a significant amount of space

Thank you!

Hello Hemanth,

OS/DB upgrade has been completed successfully on MSCS. We have switched from non-cluster to cluster production system without any downtime.

Once again thanks for your help hemanth.
