Unable to connect to HANA SAP Netweaver instance on CAL from Remote Desktop

Former Member

I've followed the instructions on creating a trial instance of SAP Application Server ABAP 7.4 SP5 with SAP NetWeaver AS as documented here - https://caldocs.hana.ondemand.com/caldocs/help/ABAP74SP5_HANASP7_CVA_Trial_Tech_brief_user_guide.pdf...

The part I'm stuck on is connecting to the instance via Remote Desktop. In fact, the IP address of the instance on CAL is not reachable by ping. Also when I do a port scan, there are no ports open for the IP address. I did set up an access point when configuring the instance in CAL for port 3389 as a type of "Custom TCP". Is there something else that needs to be configured for this?

Hi Sinead,

did you have a look at the page already?

There is a section about connectivity issues.

In regards to access points, there is no need to change anything as the default is sufficient for all connection types listed in the documentation.

Hi Hannes,

I don't think any of those issues apply to my instance. I have created an instance but simply can't connect to the IP address of the instance via remote desktop.

About the access points - so port 3389 doesn't need to be manually added in the instance configuration? Is this not the port needed to connect to the instance via a remote connection?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Sinead,

I just started an instance of "SAP NetWeaver Application Server, add-on for code vulnerability analysis" and connected to it via RDP. No problems at all.

So here are a couple of questions:

  • So you did wait 25 minutes after the launching the instance for the first time.
  • You have a green traffic light to the left next to the instance on the INSTANCES tab (See screenhot)
  • You did not change any firewall settings inside CAL
  • You clicked on the "Connect" button in CAL (See screenhot)
  • You chose "Remote Desktop (SAP Frontend) (See screenshot)

Can you please confirm.

Regards,

Hi Hannes,

Yes I have a green light next to my instance after waiting for 25 minutes. I didn't change any firewall settings, but I added an access point for port 3389.

When I click connect, I don't see the same options, only "SAP GUI (NPL, 000, 00)" or "SAP GUI (NPL, 001, 00)":

When I click on either option it automatically downloads a .sap file.

Thanks.

Hi Sinead,

we are getting closer, very close to where the issue is 😉

In your first post you said that you are using this solution in CAL:

"SAP NetWeaver Application Server, add-on for code vulnerability analysis"

This one comes with RDP.

However, your screenshot suggest that you are in fact using this one:

"SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP 7.4 on SAP MaxDB - Trial Edition"

And this one does not come with RDP - it only provides  SAPGUI access (as you see through the available choices in the connect popup and the download of the .sap. file - a SAPGUI file).

I also checked the documentation of both solutions and both are correct, CVA (code vul.. analysis) comes with RDP and the other one with SAPGUI only. It appears that you are using the user doc for the CVA Appliance for a different one. That does not work.

Hello Sinead,

are you trying to reach the system from a "free" internet connection or are you trying to use this from your company network ?

Aha! I don't know how I landed on that documentation but you're correct, the documentation I was using was for the incorrect solution! So I need to install a trial SAP GUI on my machine?

Hi Sinead,

you need to install SAPGUI. Section 4.1.1 of the documentation tells you how.

Thanks so much for your help Hannes! More questions (sorry!) - where is the server referred to in the guide? Do you need to be a customer of SAP to download SAP GUI?

Hi Sinead,

the "server" that is referred in the user guide is the system that you deployed via CAL. It's the one with the NetWeaver & MaxDB on it. The SAPGUI executables are located there and you would need to use winscp or a similar Windows compatible tool for Linux/Windows data transfer to copy it to your Desktop.

There are also other NetWeaver Trial solutions available in CAL. Some of them come with an RDP Desktop included. My suggestion is - in case you are interested in NetWeaver (independently of the underlying database) - to use this Free solution in CAL: SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP8 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP8 [Developer Edition].

It is a NetWeaver system that comes with RDP.

  Hannes

My instance status say "suspended" and I don't see SAP GUI link.  How do I change the status and show the link for the SAP GUI?  Thanks.

Hi,

You can access the link http://portquiz.net:3389/ ?

You enable RDP on security groups in EC2?

Best Regards.

Hi,

Your port 3389 outgoing is open?

Hi Thiago,

Yes I believe so (although correct me if I'm wrong). Here are my access points in the instance config:

I added the port 3389 one as there wasn't one configured by default.

Thanks for your help.
