Cheap solution for "Lite" RF requirements

I was wondering is there a solution in SAP to address our raw material / production side.  We do not want to cover the whole production and warehouse areas with RF coverage, where real time processing is not required.  Is there a possibility to scan pallets (SUs) for later processing.  Example want to pick SUs that we want moved and then later download the SUs and move them.

SAP WM / RF related functionality is flexible to use both on RF device or SAP screen so keeping that in mind i can confirm that you can use the the RF for single process or multiple process or for a specific area. it is not necessary that all warehouse activity should be on RF but from consulting perspective if you are configuring the ITS mobile for single process or multiple process, configuration time remains same, you need to procure and installed the access port in the warehouse for proper coverage.

wrt to example yu mentioned "want to pick SUs that we want moved and then later download the SUs and move them"

The second part of the above statement "download the SUs and move them"" is not clear however regard the first part. if the requirement is to pick the SU and transfer to the line side then it is pretty much possible in RF you can create replenishment transfer order for the line side and use LM05 /LM07 to perform the confirmation activity using RF

Hi Manish, I think I need to further explain my thinking.  We have multiple WM sites and I understand all the T-Codes to run as RF.  What I am reallying trying to wrap my mind arround is to still execute as if we were RF, but maybe use a NON RF device for the user to execute.  Something that they could scan and store the SUs.  I was thinking that is it possible to send a flat file of RF instructions to a device to have a user execute in a NON RF area, then come back to the work station to upload their transactions to update WM.  Is this done in WM anywhere in the world.  IM is like giving a user pen and paper, but I want to bring the capability up to close to a WM...

As mentioned earlier SAP is very much flexible and you can use as per your requirement. I had the similar requirement in one of my implementation project where client was not confident to use the online SAP RF functionality and hence the system was designed in such a way that after transfer order creation, Transfer order related detail was getting converted into the CSV file and gets transferred to the RF device which was working in offline mode. Once user complete the process then again we used to upload the CSV data file from RF to SAP system and then further confirmation / cancellation / Deletion of Transfer order used to take place in SAP

High Level process Steps

1) Transfer order creation in SAP WM

2) Transfer the CSV file to AL11 directory with a unique naming convention e.g. YYYYMMDDHHMMSS_TO NUMBER

3) Operator dock the RF device to DOCKING station

4) Custom program to trigger the upload of CSV file from AL11 directory to RF device, Logic built to make sure that file are getting transferred successfully

5) Once file gets transferred successfully it gets moved to archive folder

6) After completion of task operator docks the RF gun at Docking station back and run the download program , This will download the CSV file from RF to system folder.

7) Run the upload program and it will transfer the file from C:\ drive to AL11 folder  and then TO confirmation takes place

Hope the above steps will give you some insight. Revert back if you need any further input

The con of the above process is you need a medium to complex custom development in SAP and same in RF for picking / put away and other activity which u have planned. Keep a track of AL11 folder size / archiving process. Troubleshooting (Handling any worst situation where data (CSV) lost during transfer or got deleted by mistake  / Dependency on vendor to make change (if any ) in the RF device for the developed screen)

Hi Manish,

We have a similar requirement to use offline RF processing.

I am not aware how offline scanning works. For example I do create a Transfer Order in the office and pass it to the RF - to which transaction in RF do we pass this information... is this a custom transaction outside SAP or a LM0* transaction?

Thank You

Martin
