Hi guys.
I would like to know if LVM is able to notify when an Instance/System is down via Notification Engine. So far Im getting notifications when a Host is unavailable or when tasks are completed (like restarting an Instance)
My next goal is to have E-mail notification when a system is shutdown not using LVM, or when a Instance is not working due another incident
Notification Setting for Validations are activated, so maybe some other check might be missing.
Thanks!
Hi Martin,
this is not possible. LVM is not a monitoring tool. If any instance is down, LVM recognizes the status but it's not a "problem" for LVM so no alerting.
You should use a monitoring tool like Solman MAI or CCMS.

Hi Martin,
What Andreas mentioned above is correct, LVM is not exactly a central monitoring, or alerting or rot-cause analysis tool like SolMan CCMS or EWA etc.
However there's some good news on this front.
We introduced a new capability in LVM 2.0 called "custom notifications" which allows you to define your own notifications etc. when an event occurs. Custom notifications helps you to implicitly invoke a provider implementation for an entity type if a notification event occurs (e.g. send notification status about validations, activities or tasks).
Here's the link to the official documentation (this is part of extended LVM configuration):
The concept is similar to defining/creating custom operations and custom hooks in LVM and basically you end up writing your own linux scripts (for example) and integrate them into LVM. Customers use this alot since every customer's landscape is unique and they always have some unique requirements to integrate their own procedures into LVM.
Here a short YouTube video on custom hooks/operations to get an idea:
So if you are ready to explore and play around with LVM a little bit - you can do a lot with it 🙂
We also have some basic integration with SolMan withe the work-mode management and IT calendar which basically allows you to jump directly into the SolMan IT calendar from LVM to see the existing work modes and also helps resolve the conflict with exisitng work modes while performing operations on systems.
Hope this helps!!

Hi Martin,
I do not have a specific example script for this but, you can refer to the following SAP notes for custom operations/hooks/services adn there are some example scripts attached to these notes as well that you may find useful:
1465491 - Provider Implementation Definition
1396981 - Custom Services Configuration for ACC 7.3/SAP LVM
Please refer to the official documentation and YouTube videos links that I provided in my previous post (above) for more information on the subject.
Hope this helps.

Adarsh
Hello,
I guess the post is older then 2.1 Ent. Edition. I am using LVM 2.1 Ent. edition and getting the system down notification thru an email, but i am looking to configure the LVM system to get System availability notification once the effected system has been made available back.

Saqib

Hi Saqib,
you are right, the initial post was answered right before Ramp Up started for SAP LVM 2.1. What kind of notification are you actually thinking about? SAP LVM communications with instance and host agent. Once a give instance (known to SAP LVM) is back online again (even on another host as it was before) SAP LVM will show that Instance with status "running" again - also telling you on which hosts it is running then. Does this help meeting your requirements?
Best regards,
Andreas
