16.5 - Receive Error When Setting up DBC

Hello,

I recently installed PowerDesigner Version 16.5.3.3 (4371), SP03 PL03.  I am testing it's various functionality, and got to database connections.  I tested initially with all my existing connections that were defined with version 15.3 utilities.  However, I learned I have an issue when I tried to define a new connection.  It turns out I cannot create new connections with 16.5.  It says that I am not logged in as the administrator.  I have found posts only saying that this error is due to a bit version difference, 32 vs 64, and that I should use 32 bit.  The issue here is that I would have to have the Netezza client installed on my machine to have the netezza driver.  That is an expensive approach just to reverse engineer a database into a modeling tool.  So the other option is to be logged in as an admin.  That will never happen given our InfoSec policies.

How can I fix this without installing the Netezza client client on my machine.  That is the only way I can get the driver for the Windows ODBC Admin to work that I am aware of.  PowerDesigner has the driver already, and I would rather use it to define my connection as it was designed to do.  Please assist.  Thanks!

Pic of error attached.

As shown by the snapshot, the origin of your problem is that you are trying to define an ODBC System Datasource (for which you need to have the permissions to write in the LOCAL_MACHINE registry, which may require the Administration right).

Why don't you just define an ODBC Local System DataSource?

("User DSN" instead of "System DSN" in ODBC Data Source Administrator)

It is regular operating procedure for us to define a connection as System.  Being that all previous connections were defined that way in 15.3 and and that they still work in 16.5, I would like a workaround or fix to continue BAU.

However, when attempting to connect via your suggested method, I did find that Netezza still does not exist as a DBMS choice no matter what method I choose.  That tells me that regardless of the error I am receiving, it looks like PowerDesigner is using what comes with Windows anyways, and that I will still need to get the driver installed on my workstation.

Can someone from SAP please confirm/deny the approach I need to take?

Thanks.

One more thing... I can run the 32 bit Microsoft ODBC Admin, but per the previous communications, it does not have a Netezza DBMS option.  I will still require a driver.  for anyone who wants to do this, please use: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
