ESS from ERP 2005 installation with EP 7

Hi,

We are planning the implementation of the ESS from ERP 2005. We know that ESS has to run with EP 7 (nw2004s). But does it have to be running in the same physical server as EP7? Or they can be seperated (i.e. EP7 on one box, and ESS/ERP with WAS 7 on another box). Is such distributed scenario supported?

ESS is a business package that needs to be deployed in the Portal. There is no question of separating ESS from the Portal. Let me add some clarity here:

1. You install Portal.

2. You deploy ESS BP in the Portal.

3. You create a back-end connection say ER1 to your ERP

system in the Portal .

4. You assign the ESS system alias to the ER1 system object in your Portal. That is how ESS communicates with your back-end system.

5. You can only have distributed installation for your Portal. For instance: You install the CI and DB on separate servers.

Do you have to install all of the SDA's in the ESS SCA even though you arent using all of the languages?

Thanks a lot for all the inputs.

My impression was ESS is just another Web Dynpro application which will run as iView inside EP. However, from the answers below it looks like ESS is not just a WD app but also has some special add-ons to the EP, which requires the whole ESS to run in the same box as the EP. Let me know if my understanding is not correct.

SAP has changed the underlying technology for the ESS/MSS BP for ERP 2004/2005. The current ESS/MSS BPs for ERP 2004/2005 are based on the WEBAS 640 architecture.

Like Christopher mentioned, you will need to install the XSS component which is based on SAP WEBAS JAVA 640 stack.

XSS contains ESS, MSS & PCUI_GP(Floor Plan manager) components. When you install XSS, you obtain the above 3 components. If you plan to implement ESS only, then you can deploy ESS & PCUI_GP components separately.

Stating in a simpler form:

1. My first reponse regarding ESS is best applicable for R/3 systems below ERP 2004/2005. Ex: R/3 4.70

2. For your scenario:

a) SAP XSS is a mandatory installation component. It

includes BPs for ESS, MSS & PCUI_GP. If you choose

to implement ESS alone, then you can deploy BP ESS

& PCUI_GP.

Note: PCUI_GP is a mandatory component whether you implement MSS or ESS.

b) Regarding your question on Distributed

installation: you can use 2 Options.

Option 1: SAP JAVA 6.40/7.0 + SAP EP 6.0/7.0 + SAP XSS 5.0 - All components using a single J2EE instance on one server

Option 2: SAP JAVA 6.40/7.0 + SAP EP 6.0/7.0 on server 1

and SAP XSS/ESS on server 2 - Distributed scenario

Actually, Phani, there is a little more to it with ESS/MSS for ERP 2004/2005. You will need to install the XSS components also. They are NOT part of the business package(s) themselves. Those Java components require some additional configuration.
