PI vs MII

HI experts,

We have a requirement to fetch the real time data from scada's and represent in dashboards.

Here as per client why MII is better than PI and how it is better to build dashboards in BI and BO over sap mii.

Pls clarify my droughts.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Laxman.

Hi Laxman,

MII gives you connectivity to all those data sources would run on OPC standards and other discrete relational data sources with brilliant dashboarding capacity.

The thing is, we have PI in most of the cases as a single point of contact that interfaces B-2-B systems. So if you have systems that can connect to scada and get data on the dashboards, you can choose whatever way you want to go just that the solution would be more scalable if you use MII.

It's completely a specific scenario that you can evaluate and suggest an apt solution.

Hope this helps you reaching there.

Thanks,

Swaroop

Better is a relative term and as Christian points out there is a document which explains the pros and cons of each approach.  Please note that MII provides both "Integration and Intelligence" which is messaging and integration but also includes dashboarding and visualization.  The visualization support is with SAP UI5 reporting objects and it also has native integration between SAP Dashboards, Crystal Reports, and Lumira as well.

Hi Salvatore/Christian,

Thanks for your replies,

As per my understanding MII and PI both can read Current data from PLC s but the major difference is PI cannot visualize it and MII can visualize the Current data in dashboards.

And If PI can Integrate with BO or Bi , we Can visualize the data on dashboards.

If I am wrong pls correct.

If talk about only reading current data from PLC,DCS do we get any other benefits with MII compare to PI ?

Hi Laxman,

I think that overall time required to build the dashboards/reports in MII will be lesser than as compared to BI/BO beacuse you have componenets like iSPCChart etc which are very much native to for example manufacturing analysis.

The various connectors available as out of the box feature in MII helps in connecting MII with MES,LIMS,any SQL/Oracle DB,SCADA,Historians etc so that is also one advantage.

In your case is it only SCADA which is getting connected or are there any other systems also involved?

Hi Muddassar,

Thanks for valuable information,

In my case I need to fetch the data from scada and represent on dashboard.

Client is already having the PI, Can recommend MII instead PI... or same can achieve

throw PI by integrating BO.

For your question just I need to integrate scada only and if required BO if client wants dashboards on BO.

Before commenting I will let you know that I have very less knowledge about PI.

What I have understood/read is that SAP PI can also connect to SCADA and read tags from SCADA therefore that can be achieved but you will need some OPC Gateway or OPC Client in between SAP PI and SCADA systems.

For example Kepware OPC Client in between SAP PI and SCADA.

This communication will be Web services based and once the data is captured in PI then the same can be dashboarded in SAP BO.

Here,in SAP MII we get a bundled component called SAP PCo(Plant Connectivity) which takes care of the integration between SAP MII and any OPC Compliant system like SCADA,Historian etc.We directly configure the Agent instance in SAP PCo.

Other experts can comment here and gauge the gravity of the situation and fitment of MII in your case.

Muddassar
