RFC user are not disconnected in BW when I close design studio dashboard

Hi,

I have encounter a problem as below and hope to find a solution here.

BW server:  BW 7.3

BOE server: SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 Support Pack 4

Design studio:  DS1.3  Support pack 1

Connection method:  BICS query connection

Here is the problem:

The Design studio application dashboard consists of 13 queries (BICS connections to BW) in total. However, once the dashboard is opened, It creates 25 RFC sessions in BW ( you can check this by using tcode SM04 in BW workbench). Even though I click "log off" in launchpad to sign off the dashboard.  RFC connections still saved in the BW. If I open another IE and open dashboard again, it creates another 25 sessions in BW. The problem is that the RFC user connections are never released. And soon it will pipe up and reach the limits of the number of RFC user connections in BW. Afterwards, I am not to able into BW any more.

I dont know whether anybody else encounter.  Is this a BO problem or BW?

Thank you.

Hello,

from your description there are more issues - when using design studio, you should have one connection per sysstem alias (independent of number of queries). If you see 25 new connections, this is quite strange.

what is the size of those connections (visible in SM04)?

btw. it is normal if after logoff the SM04 session is kept on 1 mb memory use - all sessions after logoff are kept (for the case user will relogon) but the memory is reduced to 1 MB only. this is how JCo handles the connection pool. You see those sessions as still existing, but those are marked as "free" and in case it will be required, the system will remove all those.

In your case, you could check also on the BIP platform how many design studio sessions you have?

Hi Karol,

Do you know where the setting for releasing the sessions are set?

E.g. when a user closes the browser window, the sessions in sm04 are not release immediately, hence there most be some timeout setting controlling the closing of sessions?

Is there a setting on BO side, if so where?

Is there a setting on BW side, if so where?

Thanks in advance.

Comparing to Xcelsius, which pulls data and then closes the session, Design Studio of course gives faster response times, as it already has an open session when doing filtering on a data source. But I can see sessions hanging for hours after a user has shutdown his/her computer (and there are sessions greater than 1 MB).

Hi,

I see in your screenshot that about 8 sessions are in SM04 > 1MB - if those are closed in the browser, you have clearly an session issue. Please check if you fit into the SAP note:

2049153 - OpenDocument Session Timeout - known issue with IE 10

Corerct behavior is - once browser is closed, the session must be "released" - meaning in SM04 the memory must go down to 1MB.

thank you Karol.  I will investigate further.  It seems like that even though I close the launchpad in IE and close the IE completely, the BO user session still hangs on BOE server (I have clearly see the user in the session module of CMC). I suppose there is some timeout mechanism so that the BO user will eventually get disconnected.

By the way, My IE version is IE9. So I should be excluded from the cause of 2049153 - OpenDocument Session Timeout - known issue with IE 10.

there is timeout, but on browser close there should be explicit logoff.

the timeout is on 30 minutes or something like this.
