Tracking a Part mid process

Former Member

I’m just after some clarification of how BOM’s work in SAP. I think one of the main points is tracking Laser parts and any process applied to them.

If there was an order for 50 parts that are cut and formed, but we actually cut 60 and form 50. Next time an order comes on for that part, will it see that there are 10 available that only need the second process to be applied?

If not can the work order say although there are only 50 on order, there are 60 to be formed and we can store 10.

Best Regards

Phil

Phillip,

If you are working in MTS scenario like Planning Strategies 10,40 system considers the available stock during MRP.

If we take your example Based on your customer order for 50 if you have made 60 then during next customer order entry system would considers remaining 10 for ATP in case of above MTS Scenarios.

If you are working with MTO Planning Strategy 20 then available stock would be having special stock indicator with customer assignment so if you create next Sales order with different customer then ATP would not consider remaining 10 Stock.

Kiran,

Thanks for the information. Forgive my ignorance with SAP. I'm new to it!

We are using Standard SAP Business One. Is MTPlanning stratagies 10, 40 compatible with this?

Philip,

What is your business scenario it is not easy to suggest without knowing the business.

If you can let us know from Sales order entry to Production confirmation what you are expecting from SAP so that we can suggest suitable planning

strategy.

Refer below SAP help link to know more about MTS and MTO Planning strategies SAP Library - Demand Management (PP-MP-DEM)

Kiran.

We manufacture and fabricate parts for the steel industry. Some will have huge BOMS. For example 1 large Assembly will consist of multiple parts with their own BOMS. Each with thier own process's.

A quick flow would be this

1. Sales order------> yes or no

2. (If no) Delivery Note-----> AR Invoice ----> Incoming Payment

2. (If yes) Create procurement document from sales order----> Check Current parts available and stage of process------>Production order Created for Components Required ------>  Create Job Cards for BOMs with processes required-----> back to delivery note

Philip,

If you manufacture based on only Sales order no PIRs you can use MTO Planning Strategy 20.

In case if you want all other Assemblies and Components below your FG to have MTS you can set Collective Indicator 2 in MRP4 view in Indi/Collective field.

Otherwise if you want to consider PIR also and PIR consumption based on Sales order then you can try with MTS 40 Planning Strategy.

Please test both scenarios so that you can understand how system is functioning and If you have any further questions let us know.

I’ve attached 2 BOM’s for one of our parts. The first image is our perfect world requirement. The processes in red are processes where we would like to track the number of parts in production. However from our meetings it appears that this might not be possible within SAP. So image 2 is a BOM that replicates the way we build on the shop floor, to fit with in SAP’s restrictions.

Could you take a quick and look and see if we would have to go with the second BOM or if the first is feasible? Also is MTO part of our standard SAP?

Philip,

First thing I could not clearly see your snap shots.

But I can visualize what you are trying to show me it seems to be all Red parts are components and Green parts are Assemblies,Sub assemblies and Final Product(Hope I am correct?)

If you want to track the Red Parts with their inventory and Allocate available stock with other open sales orders you can do it my setting Collective Indicator 2 in MRP4 view of their material master even though the header part has planning strategy 20.

If I have misunderstood your question then please let me know.

Kiran, I cant thank you enough for the time you are taking to help. Its probably more of a case of me not understanding SAP properly.

The orange parts a parts we buy in complete. The blue are parts we make from these and our own, the green bits under them are the processes that accompany them. Some of the parts we want to track at certain points of the process to see how man we have in WIP.

However the problem thats arising is that SAP doesnt know how many we have in WIP. It only knows how many parts have had the final operation applied to it. (So I'm told)

Philip,

Did you check with WIP Process in SAP if not consult your CO consultant.

You can calculate or track WIP during your production process through KKAX/KKAS transactions.

Please note that order must have status PCNF, PDLV not CNF,DLV or TECO status to calculate WIP for any order.

The WIP quantity to be valuated is calculated from the reported yield of the operation minus the quantity already delivered and minus the scrap quantity already reported for subsequent operations (cumulative scrap).
