development system changes , effect on production

Hi,

I am very confused on the topic of SAP system landscape. There are objects in a request that has been released to production . I only need to change a few datatypes of the table structure . How will they take effect on production system. Suggest the easiest method to achieve this.

Also provide me links to study in depth the topic of system landscape and the actual procedure.
