Crystal Report Version 8.5 issue with SQL Server 2016

I am currently facing issue with Crystal Report 2008 (version 12.2) and SQL Server 2016 combination. There are some report that throws following error:

"the field name is not known, Detail: Errorkind. Error in File temp_3f...rpt. Error in formula Record_Selection. Table and field it is complaining about is there in database and when i take a backup of same database and restore in SQL 2014 it works without an issue. Furthermore, I have checked permission on both SQL server for the user and it has exactly same level of permission on both. Tried in both Server 2012R2 & Windows 8.1 OS. I am running out of any ideas any suggestion would be much appreciated.

With ODBC driver it is important to have supported driver or at least the latest. The ODBC driver named "SQL Server" has many issues I would suggest to go with Native Client ODBC drivers.

SQL 2016 is currently not supported.

Try ODBC, it may work.
