DB Connect is used to connect external Databases as source systems (it even depends on the platform for eg Oracle Oracle 8.x and higher Oracle 8.1.7.3 with BW 3.0B WAS 6.20) to fully leverage the DB connect Architecture

BAPIS- In order to enable extraction of data and metadata from non-SAP sources on the application level, SAP BW provides open interfaces - staging BAPIs
You can hard cod the ETL using these BAPIS, generally we use third party integration tools like Assential DATA STAGE...
