SP Upgrade in case of multiple App servers

Hi Team,

I am performing SP11 Upgrade on my ECC 6.0 EHP6 server using SUM.

As of now I have Upgraded Systems from Dev to Pre-Prod all having only CI. In Prod, We have 10 App servers(ABAP only) So thinking what additional steps I need to perform in case of Prod due to multiple app servers.

As per my understanding I only need to manually stop all App servers when SUM reach downtime phase and start App servers when SUM execution is complete and there is no additional Step to be followed.

Please suggest if you think there is any other step also which I need to follow on Prod system due to multiple app servers.

Regards,

Shivam

Hi,

Clarifying in simple words - SP update doesn't impact application servers, you just stop them and restart them once the SP update is done. Only release upgrades impacts the AS's.

As you are doing an SP update then that is the only thing required.

Apart from that if you are using SUM with the help of a shadow system especially during an upgrade or EHP update, the reason why SUM is asking you to stop the AS is because SUM updates the AS profiles and also SUM stops only the CI and not the AS's. This is reason why SUM provides an option called "Update Dialog Instances" in the configuration phase.

Hi Shivam,

As per my understanding I only need to manually stop all App servers when SUM reach downtime phase and start App servers when SUM execution is complete and there is no additional Step to be followed.

This is what is required to be done to ensure buffers are synchronized rightly to avoid any dumps.

Secondly if you also have kernel upgrades part of this then ensure that each app server has same kernel levels.
