Forget about the workflow/HWC/MBO apps in older versions of SMP 3 . SMP 3 has large difference with older versions in terms of architecture, hence the development approaches also changed. As mentioned by Jitendra and Virinchy the two major approaches are native app development and Hybrid app development.

For complex business scenarios, best UI, best performance native approach is suitable, where you need to use the Odata SDK that comes with SMP SDK to develop the app. Currently the Odata SDK supports only Android and IOS, more platform support is planned for future. The REST API approach helps us to develop native apps for other platforms like Win 8 and Blackberry. (REST API can be used for hybrid apps too)

The hybrid apps are based on Cordova in SMP 3. SAP provides cordova plugins to include enterprise level features to app like push notifications, logon, logging, encryption etc. These apps are suitable for light weight apps like PO approval or PR approval. You need skills in web technologies like Javascript, HTML5, CSS to develop these types of apps.

Apart from the above SMP 3 has Syclo and Mobilizer platforms. Syclo is based on meta data driven approach and Mobilizer helps in development of mCommerce solutions (ex. mobile banking).

Hope you got an idea on different approaches in SMP 3 based app development.

Odata is the interface in SMP3. In the case of SAP as backend you can create Odata services using Gateway (formerly NWGW) for non-SAP backend you need to use GWPA (a plugin for eclipse, for modeling Odata service) and Integration Gateway (free component in SMP 3) to create Odata services.
