Launch Fiori launchpad from NWBC 4.0

Hi

Can we launch Fiori launchpad from NWBC 4.0? I looked at a couple of presentation from SAP on NWBC and they suggested that it is on the future roadmap for NWBC. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Pankaj

The launch of a SAP Fiori launchpad from NWBC 4.0 should not be a problem. For sure not if you start it in a separte browser window (setting in PFCG rol), but even embedded in the NWBC it should work, as it is a simple URL call as Damean correctly stated.

Whatever you start or do then inside the launchpad happens in the same NWBC tab, so no new tab is open.

This is something we have to closer look at for future improvements bringing the NWBC and the FLP closer together. Also other topics to improve the handshake between NWBC and FLP are under investigation at the moment i.e. discussed in the current backlog planning.. like starting single Fiori apps from the NWBC index page.

Thanks for sharing this info Ingo.

I have some questions/concerns about embedding FLP in NWBC, both are UI Shells that provide certain UI services e.g. Navigation. In the case of navigation FLP uses Semantic Objects and Intents, where as NWBC (and Portal) use Object Based Navigation (OBN).

I start to worry about this shell-in-shell scenario, how will navigation be handled, will there be any issues/conflicts ??? I haven't seen much information regarding this topic. I for one would like to see more info about using FLP to aggregate other types of content not just Fiori apps - the reality is that most customers of SAP will have a hybrid scenario and continue to use a wide variety of UIs including "legacy" apps for years to come. I'd like to use FLP to aggregate Fiori, UI5, Web Dynpro, SAP GUI, Personas etc... all in one Launchpad.... I hope that's where we are heading.

Thanks - sorry for hijacking this thread a bit,

Simon

Hi Simon,

There is no official documentation about this topic simply because we are working on it these days... Your comment is clear and is already part of our roadmap - extend the rich of UI technologies consumed via the Fiori launchpad (on top of: Fiori, custom UI5, Web Dynpro ABAP, SAP Gui for HTML and Personas).

Regarding the navigation topic, I will make sure you get an answer via the feedback council Jam group.

Thanks everyone; these are good discussion points. In the mean time I got the Fiori app working in my NWBC through favorites however not sure if we can simply launch it from system selector screen. I tried and it failed which is understood as either ABAP or Portal type are the options as of now. I was reading somewhere to use as an iView in the portal as well which is not an option for us right now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Pankaj,

You are correct, the NWBC desktop can only have system connections to Portal or ABAP systems and always starts with the index page that shows the user menu items as defined in the user role. I'd suggest that you create an entry in the menu for the user of type "URL" and provide the FLP start URL. A user would then have to click the menu entry to open the FLP (in a new Tab of NWBC).

I think that is the only integration that would work as of now

..."as of now" - we are working on a long term solution.

I would like to point you to one documentation in the help site, not sure if it will help, but just in case: Running a Standalone Application - User Interface Add-On for SAP NetWeaver - SAP Library

Thanks Aviad,

I have seen that page before, but honestly I was then and still am a bit confused about that scenario. Is it a way to call a Fiori app via the FLP (therefore getting the FLP services) without actually first having to land on the Launchpad itself? If it is then it is similar to how in NWBC (HTML) you can directly call a menu item and choose to display the NWBC header etc... or not Long Form of URL for ~canvas Sequence - User Interface Add-On for SAP NetWeaver - SAP Library

It seems like a very similar thing to me, sort of like a headerless portal page. All of these are sort of achieving the same result IMO.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon just a small side comment to your previous statements:

"and always starts with the index page that shows the user menu items as defined in the user role" and " A user would then have to click the menu entry to open the FLP"

That for sure is one way to starte the FLP in a NWBC Tab. But if you want to have the FLP open directly when starting the NWBC and e.g. do not want or need the Index page, you can easily get rid of that.

Just use the PIN/UNPIN functionality of tabs (works with Index Page as well).. so first time you do it like you described it above, then you unpin the INDEX PAGE tab and PIN the FLP tab.. and next time you start NWBC the FLP will directly be launched.

I know this is just a side discussion here but a small but nice feature

Thanks Ingo, yes of course you can do this and thanks for pointing it out. Also worth noting that each user would have to do this as there is no way to unpin/pin tabs for everyone AFAIK.

Given Fiori Launchpad is basically just an URL, so I don't see why not.

I believe Fiori Launchpad uses the existing Launchpad implementation for navigation (LPD_CUST) and that is supported by NWBC meaning NWBC knows how to handle launchpad navigation requests. Maybe there is still something SAP needs to do in order to fully support Fiori Launchpad in NWBC but as far as I see it the most important part is there.
