We are unable to use Crystal with VB6, Sybase 15 and Windows 8

Hi!

We are upgrading our applications to work properly with O.S. Windows 8.1, but we are facing a lot of problems with compatibility between Crystal, Sybase and VB6

Our Scenario is:

- VB6

- Windows 8.1

- Sybase 15 (Adaptive Server Enterprise)

- Crytal Report

Questions we have.

1) What is the approved version of Crystal Report for Windows 8.1.

2) What is the approved version of Crystal Report that works with Sybase 15 (Adaptive Server Enterprise) ?

3) When it comes to Windows 8.1, we are facing a lot of problems when trying to register the dlls of Crystal Report. Using install application or manually we are unable to correctly register the dlls.

   We already tried Version 8 e Version 11 of Crystal Report without success.

   Are you familiar with those problems with registering dlls on Windows 8.1.

   That's the command we are using REGSVR32 [dll]

4) Do you have any client working at the same time with Windows 8.1, Sybase 15, Visual Basci 6 and Crystal Report?

Hi Daniel,

I think the best answer for all your questions would be to upgrade from VB6 to Visual Studio 2010 at the very least.  Visual Studio 2013 would be better for Windows 8.1 to use .NET 4.5 and potentially 64 bit processing.

I don't think Crystal 8 even supported manual DLL installs.  All the recent versions only use MergeModules.

It just makes sense to upgrade your programming platform since you've already upgraded your backend and your targetted platform.

In my experience, the old RDC object model can work fine on the latest platforms (though it may require a couple of tweaks).

Manually registering dlls is a red flag. You must let the Merge Modules take care of the runtime install.

I'm not sure I understand the reference to: "Version 8 e Version 11." Do you mean Version 8 and version 11?  For your scenario, you should move to 11.5 (XI R2) and use the latest SP.

But to more easily isolate the issue, install Crystal 11.5 (XI R2) Designer first and see if it can run the report on that platform against your data source.

We're going to change our strategy. Instead of trying to make VB6 (desktop applications) work with Crystal Reports in a Win8 O.S., we're going toward Reporting Services. We're going to use a web approach.

Brian is correct, but to answer your questions:

1) What is the approved version of Crystal Report for Windows 8.1.

See this wiki. The upshot of that is that none of the versions of CR that support win 8.x include the Report Designer Component SDK that you would be using in VB 6. E.g.; last version to include the RDC was 11.5.x (CR XI R2) - out of support since June 2012.

2) What is the approved version of Crystal Report that works with Sybase 15 (Adaptive Server Enterprise) ?

CR 2013 (does not include any SDK) suports Subase 15. See the CR 2013 PAM for more details:

You are asking about an unsupported scenario, so no there are no customers working in the environment you are describing.
