Former Member

Hi,

Intially, I was an ABAPer with exposure to Business Workflow.

Then, i moved to ChaRM in solman.

I have 3 yrs of experience in Change Managment in Solution Manager.

I am having doubt over market demand of ChaRM experts.

Please let me know if it will be good to continue in ChaRM/solman or do i need to enhance my career in some other area.

Regards,

Gopal

Hi Gopal

All customers need Solution Manger for their SAP setup now (well those now on ECC 5 and ECC 6 onwards). How much of Solution Manger being used by a customer will depend on their size and landscape complexity. A lot of SolMan is in the Basis area of usage but again that will depend on the client

If you have Charm experience do you have a strong understanding of managing transports and system releases? As a different career pathway, you could move away from the technical aspect and move into system and release management. This can be quite a fulfilling job to work on implementations and support to manage transports through to production. It would take a lot more general knowledge across SAP and communication with the different teams (management, test teams, prod support, etc)

With having ABAP, Solution Manager and Workflow you are getting a good all-rounder technical skill set you. If you were to choose one of them I would probably look at ABAP and Workflow. If Solution Manager, you need to diversify in the modules.

Part of your decision needs to come back to what you are good at and what interests you. Enhancing career really depends on your goals.

Hi Colleen,

Thanks for your detailed insight on this topic.

I raised this question because i want to move into a business specific role or a technofunctional role rather then being in a completely technical role(as in ABAPer).

I had doubt over solman because i dont have Basis experience.

FYI, During last three years I have handled multiple releases and also managed transports across the landscape, resolving whatever issues occured. I have managed all those releases and coordinated with all the concerned parties as well.

Gopal

Well you definitely spoke like an expert here:

So why the doubts now?

Hi Kishan,

The reason behind my doubt is that a lot of Solman is related to Basis and i don't have any prior basis experience.

Moreover, all of solman experience has been from functional solman aspect and from being a part of Change Mgmt/Release Mgmt team. I have not been involved in any installation/upgrade/configuration work till now.

My point is, how can you give expert advice on a topic you don't have much idea about and still ask for points?

I think my answer to that particular query was quiet apt to the requirement of the requester.

My advice was based on my engagement in Change Mgmt/Release Mgmt and also due to my closely linked role to business.

Hi Gopal,

Yes you are right it is for Basis team.  We have recently implemented SOLMAN ChaRM but I never see guys who implemented by functional or technical ABAP... All those guys are from Basis and business release management / change management team.  You have to always keep wider option in SOLMAN because I have done a certification in SOLMAN ASAP Methodologies and I am a functional guy.  Moreover, I never worked on SOLMAN to configure for upgrade or implementation or rollout projects, so only big companies they need a separate a person to have in SOLMAN ChaRM in SAP world.  However, current trend is changed all over the world.  The guy should have minimum of two modules or two systems to be known.  So, when you try for SAP opportunity just have your ABAP Business workflow as well.

Hi Gopal,

What I meant to say that search for SAP ABAP workflow and SOLMAN ChaRM both jobs.  Also, don't rely on only in ChaRM, you scale up your skill in SAP ABAP.

Hi Gopi,

Thanks a lot for your kind advice.

My intention behind all this detailed questionnaire was to move away from ABAP and into some functional/business roles.

Hi Gopal,

Yes, I saw two people in our team moved from ABAP to SAP SD Functional consultant and another guy to CRM Functional Consultant.

Anyhow, best of luck and why don't try SAP HANA.

Working knowledge of BI/BO is pre-requisite for HANA, is that correct.

No HANA is an architecture platform not just for BI

You might want to look at the free courses in open.sap.com for introduction to HANA

Hi Colleen,

This link was really very much informative and gave me a good insight of HANA.

Moreover, my original doubt also stands much more clear as of now.
