What is the "Further Processing" variant in Process Chain

When I create a variant to run an InfoPackage in a Process Chain to load data to an ODS target, find three related variants are brought in, 1st one is the Load Data variant, 2nd one is to activate this ODS, and the 3rd one is the variant "Further Processing". What's the use of this variant? Someone told me that it could be related to the ODS setting that has the option "Update data targets from ODS object automatically" checked, but when I go to the settings of this ODS, find this option is Not checked. Then how this variant is brought up? If I don't use it, does it matter?
