If we upgrade the SLES11 SP4 to SLES12 in x86 based HANA appliance system, is it possible to use the backup/restore method to migrate to Power8 systems with SLES12?

Nope, a direct x86 <-> PowerPC backup/restore is not supported.

This currently not supported, here are the official details:

1642148 - FAQ: SAP HANA Database Backup & Recovery

"45. Can I recover a HANA backup made on INTEL architecture on IBM Power architecture?

No.

It’s not possible to recover a HANA data or log backup made on INTEL on POWER or vice versa."

Starting with SLES12 on IBM Power little Endian is used. But you have to use HANA 2.0! Prior releases (< HANA2.0) are not supported with SLES12 on Power.
