NEW BPC IMPLEMENTATION WITH BW and BO

Former Member

Our company is currently implementing SAP BPC and BO

I was given the opportunity to take some training but I am not sure which way to go about it.

I have 8 years of mostly ABAP experience with web dynpro(and some java and other OO languages). I am quite interested in BO for the fact that it integrates with 3rd party software/DBs and I dont have to be tied to SAP till eternity.

But at the same time, I have some reservations going the BO way because of my many years of ABAP experience which I think BW will suit me better in the short term( less learning curve).

Can someone who has been in my shoes provide some insight into my future?

One of the reasons I am leading more towards BO is for the  fact that HANA will provide most of the  BW functionality build into it in the future. This argument alone makes me hesitant to invest myself in BW at this time.

Also , does BO have much to do with SAP BPC?  I hear is that most of the development work will be done in EXCEL and BW? is this true? will there be need for BO developer?

thanks

Hi Juan,

It all depends what do you want to do in the BPC project.

BO is a very loose term, mostly is related to Dashboarding, BO consultant would create the link between BW and BO tools, and use that tool for reporting like crystal reports and dashboard.

for BPC NW you will get Technical Consultant and Functional Consultants, with your background you will be doing the technical side of things. Later on if you have time you can start doing front-end (that is based in excel)

BPC is build on BW, it is very imported for you to understand BW.

So I would suggest you do the BW instead of BO.

Thanks for you responses

There 2 BW training classes that are shown to be entry level courses.

BW305(BW Query Design and Analysis)

and

BW310(BW - Enterprise Data Warehousing)

For our current implementation( BPC with BW and BO implementation), which courses would be the most beneficial to me?

Hi Juan,

BW310 will be more beneficial for you atm.

Could be kind of enough to explain why this class would be more beneficial to me relating to BO and BPC then BW305?

Hi Juan,

BW310 will teach you BW, which is required for BPC, after the course you will understand terms like Infoprovider, infoobects, which you help you to load data from BW into BPC.

BW305 if more for building queries in the BW system, if will be helpful after you done the BW310. I don't think BW305 is related to BPC at all.

Hi Juan,

Well tough call!

It seems like future is going to be BOBJ and HANA but still I dont think BW is going any where at least for few years. Most of HANA implementations are also (BW on HANA).

If you go to BW side, you will have an edge due to ABAP experience which also brings allot of SAP backend knowledge tables and its relations etc.

If you want to go on reporting side only, then BOBJ is now the presentation layer for all sort of reporting. You can start from WEBI followed by Crystal and Dash Board. Data Services (BOBJ ETL tool) can also be a good fit for you as it requires some programming for data massage/transformation.

BPC is very specialized tool which requires allot of finance and controlling functional knowledge. Specially consolidation side is too much functional. Planning side requires comparatively less functional knowledge but it suits BW consultants more.
