system copy - start export on application server / dialog instance

Hello experts,

i have the following szenario:

SAP ERP 6.0 on

Windows 2003 / MS SQL Server 2005

Central system (central instanz and db instanz on one host) and one dialog instance.

The export on my central system takes a long time, because the DB and the R3Load processes share 4 CPUs.

Is it possible to start the SWPM (SAPInst) on the application server / dialog instanz? (due to performance)

When i try to start the SAPInst on my DI, first it works fine. It collects the profiles, find the DB, and so forth.

But the SAPInst dont ask for some export parameters (e.g. Load Jobs, ..) and the task finished with an empty export directory.

regards

Benjamin

    Hi Benjamin,

For a SQL Server system it's generally recommended to choose the database-dependent system copy method, aka detach/attach or backup/restore.  For an ABAP-only system, you don't need to do any export with SWPM.  Instead, you take a backup of your source system, restore it to your target system, then use SWPM to install the target system around it and adapt parameters in the database (like SID, schema, etc) to the target system.

If it's a J2EE or dual-stack system you can still do it this way for the database, then use SWPM to export and import only the J2EE portion.

The advantages are no additional load or downtime for the source system, and overall the process is much faster and less error-prone.

    Regards,

    Matt

    Hi Benjamin,

You can use backup/restore strateg over here.

You need to run the sapinst on the host where DB is running if you are taking the export of DB.

It will give you empty folder , if you run it from other dialog instances.

    Hi all,

    thanks for your reply.

The background for my system copy (ABAP only) is a migration project, therefore the backup/restore or detach/attach method is not an option for me.

It means that there is no way to start the export on an application server instead of the db server?

    Thank you very much,

    Benjamin

    Hello

To the best of my knowledge you should start the sapinst for the export on the CI node and not on any of the AS nodes.

    I am agree with matt,

for ms sql use the attache/detach option. Load the database in target DB host, then do the system copy. And later you can install dialog instance. and adjust the profile parameters as like the previous system. You need to to schema repair option for it also see note(1294762) and apply license also.
