IM in warehouse : Use of scanner

We are trying to implement a process which would require scanning of materials in the warehouse. The scanning process should be able to retrieve information about the material being scanned.I could only think of RFID as a solution . Could I get any info on other methods available to do the same. We are looking for something simpler than RFID which we could use.
