IM in warehouse : Use of scanner

We are trying to implement a process which would require scanning of materials in the warehouse. The scanning process should be able to retrieve information about the material being scanned.I could only think of RFID as a solution . Could I get any info on other methods available to do the same. We are looking for something simpler than RFID which we could use.

You can use Mobile Data Entry transactions, developed in either ABAP or WebDynpro, that that can be executed from hand held scanners in the warehouse. The Mobile Data entry transactions developed in ABAP can be rendered to the hand held devices using SAPConsole.
