Products in CRM

Hiya,

Usually all the products(materials) are downloaded from R/3. Then what's the advantage of creating products in CRM or enhancement of product master using set types & attributes? What are the practical advantages of product enhancement? If we do define new attributes in CRM, how are they transferred to R/3?
